NIGHTCLUB FLYERS DO NOT WORK ANYMORE!
A Nightclub Owner in Brooklyn, New York called me, he was devastated.
He has a huge club, really upscale, state of the art Mecca.
This Owner planned a major, monumental Saturday Night Promotion, he took
His time designing the flyer for maximum reaction.
He printed up 20,000 Flyers, hired a premier (supposedly) Street Team,
fanned out all over Brooklyn, picking and choosing areas of target patrons
(so they said) they did this for two straight weeks, 10,000 flyers a week.
Sad to say, when the Saturday Night Promotion came up, I hesitate to say
what happened, but here goes, 15, that's right just 15 patrons showed up.
So when you tell me how flyers are so effective, I can cite another ten of
these factual incidents as the basis for my aversion to wasting money on
The reason club promoters (I loathe them) use flyers is to put their name
on them, it's pure ego for them, and the insanity is, the Owner pays for
the flyers that these let me think of a better name other than club
that these so called "I can pack your Club Experts" hand out.
Flyers are like analog TVs, every TV, is now digital, that is the
that straight up tells you, stay away from, run from,
Those days of marketing are long gone.
A Club Owner/Promoter in Lubbock, Texas, uses Clear Channel Radio, flyers
and posters, his club is dead, yet week after week he does the same
antiquated marketing routine.
Let me make this perfectly clear, Flyers, big, small, wallet, size,
two-sided, DO NOT WORK.
They are the cheap, the worthless, the most ineffective way of trying to
attract Clubbers in these $4 plus for a gallon gas
WHY IS YOUR NIGHTCLUB LIKE GROUNDHOG DAY?
Ever notice and stop to think that your Club, your Bar, your Lounge, your
Sports Bar are all in the "Groundhog Day" Movie, with Bill Murray?
That's right, same, stale, predictable, boring format, advertising,
marketing, wasted club promoter, dull local band, lazy DJ, attitude staff,
every night, over and over and over and over.
NOW, place yourself in your patron's mindset, and you ask yourself, why
would anyone want to frequent my establishment, when I offer nothing
fresh, no "FUN" and zero "WOW" ?
You dread going in on nights your open, what do you think your employees
and patrons think?
To quote Rob Fitzgerald," The experience is always the same, there's no
difference between Friday Night, Saturday Night and Thursday Night.
The DJ plays the same genre of music in the same order, night after night
with no enthusiasm of any kind, Nobody wants to pay for the same thing
twice in a club"
Rob, If only Owners and Managers had your sense and comprehend what going
through the motions is doing to destroy their nights?
AN OWNER ASKS HOW TO PACK HIS CLUB BEYOND JUST SATURDAY NIGHTS?
Hi Rich, our club is not one that is in dire straights, however I am very
interested in making more revenue.
Our bathrooms are nice, the club is clean, we have smaller clean cut
security (I hate that word) staff at the front door, all the lights work,
and no one ever mouths off to me and keeps their job. They are quietly
terminated in the back office.
Our liquor cost is well under control, and the bar staff is well managed,
I have no problem telling a DJ what to do, and yes they listen.
I'd like to see what we could do with Saturday Nights?
Fridays are packed, but Saturdays are sketchy.
If your "FUN" and WOW" work well and pack it out, I would be a fool not to
consider your "Expertise." Right now Saturday Nights are wide open in our
area, and a prime Night for any Nightclub to key in on. We need to offer
some kind of event or promotion to give people a reason to come out. A DJ
playing dance/hip-hop is not going to cut it and we don't want the ghetto
crowd. Basically we need "THE FUN" and "THE WOW FACTORS" for Saturdays,
and our other nights, except Fridays.
But, what this Owner failed to say was the reason his Friday Nights are
"Packed out" are because ladies get in free and drink for free all night.
His website is nothing more then a Liquor giveaway page of drink free,
sink or swim, it's really pathetic.
What is the purpose in this recession, of giving away your door charge and
your liquor on a Premier Night such as Friday, to have wall to wall
patrons NOT SPENDING?
This Club on Florida's Treasure Coast has the worse web site I have ever
seen, nothing but drink specials, Sink or Swim, ( ARE CLUBS STILL OFFERING
THIS IDIOTIC DRUNKATHON?)
The Club has no image, no focus, no direction, no strategy.
Most Clubs have a good Staff, A DJ who responds to his Boss, a clean club
and restrooms, how your liquor costs can be in the black, defies logic?
Terminating employees in the office rather then in front of the entire
Club, is common sense.
I cannot justify the unprofessional manner in which so many General
Managers and Owners handle such situations.
As Warren Buffet said "It's only when the tide goes out, that you learn
who's been swimming in the nude."
If that's the case, Owners like this one should come to his senses and
stop the Panic Promoting" of giving away the bar and then claiming his
liquor costs are "well under control", this would be an
NIGHTCLUB OWNERS, WHEN YOUR IN A HOLE STOP DIGGING, SOMEONE TAKE THE
SHOVEL AWAY FAST.
From Owners in California to Owners in Ohio to Owners in Georgia to Owners
in New York State to Owners in Canada, never have so many Owners of bars,
clubs. lounges, and sports bars simply dug themselves so far into the
hole, they have no clue what to do.
Look, and Listen, If you've been open Years, and had great success, it's
time for change, if you've been open months and are suffering it's time
You don't need to have a meeting with your GM, your Manager and your
Partner, this isn't Rocket Science.
This is all about refocusing, redirecting and reformatting to meet the
TRENDS of TODAY and not the antiquated antics of yesteryear.
HOW CAN ONE OF YOUR WEEKEND NIGHTS BE DEAD?
How can you have a packed Friday and an empty Saturday Night?
On the other hand, how can You, have a ghost town Friday and a line
outside Saturday Night?
My Point being, both Nights should be wall to wall Women, Spenders and
You never ever want to have this new label that many Clubbers are using to
describe clubs that go all the way down the tubes, "GHETTO".
I didn't create this word, or the meaning it has.
But, I can advise you to stay away at all costs from having your club fall
into this category.
That is why you have only one good Weekend Night.
Because you are slacking off on your consistency, your format, your
overall policies, due to $4 gas, just to attract anybody you can,
What a colossal blunder.
Because, if your so smart, and your General Manager so in touch with the
Community, and your DJ has such a huge following, and everyone loves your
Bartenders, why are you only hot on one Weekend Night?
I see a brand new Club, the young Owner changed the Name, added "Karaoke"
on Thursday Nights ( why?) ( for what reason?) ( it's a total loser
His DJ is twenty-five feet up in the air, so the ability of the
Spinmeister to interact and party with the dancing divas & dynamos is non
The DJ becomes an abstract and out of reach, out of touch, off limits
aspect of "The Fun."
If your going to take over an existing club and reinvent it, you have to
do more than a name change.
More than new employees.
More than just fresh paint.
More than just the basics.
The failure rate for club takeovers is 95%.
When I owned a huge club back in the heyday, my Father who was and is a
MAVEN (aka Genius) of the industry as I have told this story before, came
into my Club, my Partner and I were ready.
We had our legal pads out, with pens in hand, as he walked through the
club, pointing out each negative and each downside.
And let me say, he held nothing back............................
Then when he was finished he looked at me and said " Son, the chances of
you succeeding are 5 out of 100"
That is when my tenacity, temerity, relentlessness, and never-ending DRIVE
I was not and did not fail, quite the opposite.
We destroyed the Competition.
Local Media did articles on my Partner and I, the fact that we just
overwhelmed the other clubs.
I use the "TRUMP METHOD," you push, you push, and
then.....................you push some more.
