No, not cheap drinks, not ladies nights, not karaoke, not flyers, not radio spots, not Texas hold em, not darts, not the past, but the future......................................... You have to make your PROMOTIONS your own. Not a copy cat. Take "DJ TIESTO" he is amazing, his talent, his originality , his style, all so unique and so far above almost every other DJ out there. Talk about "The Best Of The Best", aka "DJ TIESTO".
Spin it, Mix it, Mash it, Sample it.
That's what captivates Nightclub Crowds.
There are so many never before presented, promoted, pumped, produced "CONCEPTS", that will PACK  Clubs, but the skepticism and reluctance on the part of Owners to Rise above competing Clubs, simply results in slow and dead nights.
The Bars that think their only mission in opening is to offer free or cheap beer/drinks is not even using common sense. One Bar does not charge a cover charge until Midnight, they are only open till 2am, so that means many customers will wait till Midnight, skip paying a cover charge and hang out at the bar.
The problem with this flawed brainless bar format is, the bar only has two hours left to try and generate as much cash from these late customers as they can.
When the cover charge should be just the opposite, everybody pays till 1am. Why let bar patrons in for free, when you have Superb "FUN" and Superior "WOW FACTORS" going on?
You can't see a newly released  movie even during the day anymore for less than $7.
This same bar has retained the prior DJs who worked at this bar, when it closed down due to a lack of business.
Why would you keep anyone from the past, instead of starting FRESH with all new faces?
How do you captivate your Community by doing what was previously done?
It's like the Led Zeppelin  song "The Song Remains The Same".  
For once, sit down, list every activity, event, promotion that your bar, your club or your sports bar hosts every night, every week, every month. The reason so many bars, clubs, sports bars and lounges are going to close before 2010 ends is because of their own laziness, lack of foresight, failure to react and total breakdown in their own abilities to REBRAND, REFORMAT, REINVENT, REIGNITE, REPOSTION their establishment.
Owners are their own worse enemy, they will copy what others are doing, they will waste money on radio, flyers, drink specials, open mic nights, local bands that are over exposed, and yet when it comes to a FRESH NEW "FUN" and "WOW FACTORS" approach, they refuse to embrace change.
How can a bar or club "CAPITVATE" when they can't even begin to "CULTIVATE" the market, the demographics, the crowd they truly want, really need, and must have to turn their establishment around?
So often as I have said over and over it is the DJ, the Bartenders, the Servers, the Hostess, the boots on the ground that see what is missing in the nightly format, in the marketing techniques or lack of, and yet, Owners - General Managers allow their ego, arrogance and ignorance to prevent them from thriving.
"UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT" is placed on a lounge's reader board attached to a motel. The problem is the new Management is not doing anything different than the Old Management.
How do you expect to bring in fresh new faces, lots of hot women, when all you are doing is going through the motions that were already in place?  So when you write that radio station that check and listen  to that boring spot they produced, with no one, no one coming in from the spots, when you write that check for that newspaper ad and no one, non one is coming in from that ad, remember, I tried to get you to close that check book cancel those two forms of worthless advertising and move on to win for the rest of 2010 and all the way through 2011.

Hi Rich,
 
I'm a DJ at a bar that use to be the hot spot. I worked there for 8 years until the Owner sold it. The Owner that bought it, brought in his own DJ. After two years he sold it to the new Owners who asked me to return. Upon my return I found that the bar is dead on most nights.
 
How do we bring it back to it's former glory?

My Response: Tommy, you can't bring back this bar's "Former Glory", those days are gone forever, what you can do is take this bar and
REBRAND, REFORMAT, REMAKE this bar to a fresh new image, atmosphere, energy level and most of all "FUN" and "WOW FACTORS".
Ten years ago this bar was on top, you were the DJ and the Owners were on cloud 9, then another Owner buried the bar , now new Owners want the past to come alive again.
Impossible.
Look to the Future, Look to the "FUN", Look to the "WOW FACTORS" Owners want instant gratification, but in cases like this,  it takes consistency, the best expertise in the business, and a total commitment to no short cuts, no fast and loose with formats, policies and marketing.
I ask Owner after Owner why do you keep doing what you are,when you see it does not work? They can't give me an honest question, perhaps they are in denial or perhaps they are just lost?
Either way, they only have 1 life, and one Opportunity to take the right Path with the specific direction to achieve fresh new Greatness.
Ask you owners to contact me, if they don't, you should find a bar that will listen and learn from you, rather than shut you out.

 STOP THE FREE LADIES NIGHTS, WOMEN ARE DRINKING MORE THAN EVER BEFORE!
  More people are drinking than 20 years ago, according to a UT Southwestern Medical Center analysis of national alcohol consumption patterns. Gathered from more than 85,000 respondents, the data suggests that a variety of factors, including social, economic and ethnic influences and pressures, are involved in the increase.
"The reasons for the up tick vary and may involve complex sociodemographic changes in the population, but the findings are clear: More people are consuming alcohol now than in the early 1990s," said Dr. Raul Caetano, dean of the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions and lead author of the paper available online and in the October issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

The findings, Dr. Caetano said, suggest that continuous monitoring of alcohol consumption levels is needed to understand better the factors that affect consumption. Monitoring also would help to detect as early as possible signs that rates of risky drinking behaviors such as binge drinking or drinking to intoxication may be increasing, said Dr. Caetano, who also is regional dean of the UT School of Public Health's campus in Dallas.

"Changes in the population due to aging, the influx of immigrant groups, and a decline in mean income level because of economic recessions can all impact trends in drinking and problems associated with drinking," he said.

While more Caucasians, Hispanics and African-Americans reported drinking between 1992 and 2002, only Caucasian women consumed more drinks per person. The number of drinks that African-Americans and Hispanics consumed leveled out over the 10-year time period.

In addition to an increase in the number of both male and female drinkers within all three ethnic groups, the researchers also found that among women, Caucasians were more likely than Hispanics or African-Americans to consume five or more drinks a day or drink to intoxication. An increase in drinking five or more drinks a day was also detected among the heavier drinkers in the population, suggesting a potential polarization of drinking practices.

For the study, the researchers culled data from the 1991-92 National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey and the 2001-02 National Epidemiologic Study on Alcohol and Related Conditions. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism conducted both surveys, in which trained interviewers spoke with individuals 21 or older in the respondents' homes. The interviewers used a standardized questionnaire, so both surveys used the same overall methodology. Each study included about 43,000 participants. So IN CLOSING, forget Ladies Nights and giving women free drinks, they want to drink, they love to drink they enjoy more than one or two or three drinks, LET THEM PAY FOR THEM. Look at your liquor costs when you give the bar away to ladies, how are you ever going to reign in out of control bottle costs, when your over pouring for ladies, serving ladies free drinks, not even attempting to put the focus on what your doing, rather than what your bar is giving away?

A QUESTION FOR SMALL BAR OWNERS
Why do so many small bar owners, that only have to put 100 patrons in their bar to be packed, suffering so much? They are
doing nothing, changing nothing, implementing nothing, offering nothing to put the easiest number of customers ever into their bar!
100 to 200 Primarily Women with about 30% Men, is a cake walk.
The problem is, these Owners are so unwilling to change their
ways, operating in a drink denial mode. These types of Owners
ask friends who are DJs, or friends who have a web business, or
friends who have absolutely nothing to do with the Bar Biz to
help them put rears in the chairs. But these small Bar Owners
just don't get it, why ask those who do not have the ability to do
what you won't, to accomplish what you can't? I'M NOT talking
about the daytime hours, or the afternoon hours, or the early
evening hours, I am specifically speaking of the Party Hours,
10pm till closing. Packed four nights a week. How do you
make sense to these Owners who still think "Dancing With
