SPORTS BARS NEED TO SCORE

Sports Bars cannot be solely dependent upon a game, a tournament, a match, a bowl game, to generate revenue.
Especially, as I have said over and over with the NFL "BLACKOUTS" occurring  at their highest level this football season, it more imperative than ever, that Sports Bars expand their formats. A local Sports Bar took over a previous Sports Bar, that due to rent problems closed abruptly.
Instead of opening right away and taking full advantage of "NFL/COLLEGE" Football, this Ownership Group probably lost easy $100,000. by closing for remodeling. There was no need.
They missed every single game until Nov. 20th.
Why spend, when you can WIN cash, customers, and pay the rent?
No matter how deep the pockets of your Ownership Group are, very unwise to close the doors, chase all those patrons to other Sports Bars, only to remodel in the heart of the "MONEY MONTHS".
This Sports Bar is in an ideal location, over 75,000 cars a day, just drive right by.
It's visually right there.
It had a great reputation, just awful money management Ownership. Way too much newspaper advertising. I mean full page ads that were just awful. You can't give away the food, spend thousands of dollars each month in print media advertising it, expecting to even break even, let alone show a real bottom line of profitability.
At Night, from 10pm till 2am this Sports Bar should be a Night Life Adventure, but, these Owners have no insight or vision of the hundreds of thousands of dollars they are going to simply ignore.
YES, of course every College, Pro Team in your area that has televised games, tournaments and matches must be shown, for sure every National and International Sport that is televised should be shown, but "UFC" has just merged with "WEC" which will be completed Jan. of 2011, the point is the viewing of no holds barred fighting is slowly fading. Fans are no longer packing sports bars every time there is a Fight. The cost of the Pay Per View and the resulting revenue return makes it becoming more and more unprofitable as it was when the "UFC" first took to the airwaves. Why do you think the merger?
The other issues that arose were the testosterone  levels of male patrons watching these fights, drinking and some thinking they are just as strong, as mean, as tough as the "UFC" fighters, and they start kidding around pushing, shoving, slowly punching and starting what began as friendly horse play into unfortunate fights. Is it really worth paying for these fights, putting up with all these Joe  six packs who want to be Joe  six abs, in your bar?
There are so many diverse avenues of income that typically Sports Bar owners totally overlook, do not want to capitalize on, and simply are content to waste money on advertising that does not work, on pay per views they don't reap excellent income from, and cheap beer, cheaper wings that barely produce profits. In these "Barely Able to Survive Let Alone Thrive" you need to measure every penny you spend for what it brings back in customer counts, patron spending, and the ability to attract females.

 HERE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE:
  Hello Rich,

My name is John. I came across your pathetic owner write up and was curious if you can help start me off in the night club business. I don't want to be "that Pathetic Owner" Ever.

I have a business plan with a click of my very close Elementary-High school friends. I'm the leader and the one making the moves. I've been around the club scene for about 5 years, I'm there at least twice a week, and I always wanted one for myself & my inner circle. I live in a city right above the ___________ area

My business plan consists of a government style set up. the officers (My inner circle) are head of security, head of promotion, Head of Stock, Treasurer, Vice president/ secretary, and their all loyal & trustworthy without a doubt. and i stress that.

I have many wanting to be a DJ with a full professional set up, I have bar tenders listed with experience (family members), 1000+ people on facebook via college and high schools, I was in SGA and schools are always looking for a spot to throw prom or a homecoming/ middle school formals

and my environment just shaped me into a person that is suppose to have a nightclub.

I forced it in my inner circles heads that I'm not looking for profit for myself and explained how I just want to break even.
with out a doubt I can throw parties,

if you were in my shoes what would be your first steps? what Legal actions do take care of? Where do I go to find that location for a deal! do I lease or pray for a loan?
any advise is helpful, thank you John.

My Response: John, If I "were in your shoes",  I would work at a Club as
A Bar Back
A Bartender
A Door Host
A DJ
A Manager
John, many, many before you have thought they were destined to open a club and dominate their area, but they soon found out within their first year, they had no real clue what to do.
Before you even attempt to THINK ABOUT opening a Club. From the way you sound, very young, and a virgin to Ownership let alone management, throwing a "Prom Party" , "Homecoming Party", "Middle School Formal Night" are stand alone one night Events.
You may be successful @ hosting these Nights, but when you state " You just want to break even", that's like telling Justin Bieber to get a crew cut. Both defy common sense and logic.
Learn the Biz, Live the Biz, Like the Biz, Love the Biz, then, throw your business plan out, because where you are located, bars and clubs come and go like Judges on "American Idol" have lately.

Hey Rich I was looking through the Internet   and came across your web site and really got stuck on it. A guy I went to high school with recently took over a bar/nightclub and is letting me and a friend join in with him. Honestly I have no clue what I'm  doing , but all I know is that I'm  willing to do what ever its gonna take to get this  place jamming to its limits. I don't  wanna be just like every other promoter out there and I wanna fill this place to its limits. I read over some of your opinions which I believe are facts and feel you can help me. I'm  sure you get stuff like this all the time, but hopefully you  will take the time to get back to me like I said I could use your hand. Thanks Marlon

MY RESPONSE:
Marlon, May I ask why you, your friend, would out of nowhere, jump into the "bar/club" business, simply because some "guy from high school" is "letting you both join in".
Join in what?
What is the reputation of this establishment?
What are the terms and length of the lease?
What is the location a destination or in the heart of the action?
What is the format/concept nightly?
What is the financial condition of the club?
What type of crowd is it attracting?
What is the interior and exterior missing?
What is the competition ?
What is the genre of music played?
What is the dress code?
What is the cover charge?
What is the ratio of women vs men nightly?
What % of employees are women?
What is your specific position going to be?
I could go on and on, but Marlon, before you jump into this situation, you need to know the A to Z of every aspect for you to see up front and personally.
It would of been 100% helpful , had you filled out a Request For Help form, by clicking on the button at the top of every page of the site, rather than a generic quick hit on your situation.
Best of luck, you sound like a deer in the headlights though.

hey rich,
I came across your page one Friday  night while I had all of 10 people in my bar. I was trying to figure out what local events were going on and found nothing so I decided its time to make some changes. ive known for awhile things had to change around here but tried a few things and none of them seem to work. with the owners permission I've  thrown a few parties and had moderate success  but the cost of the party brought the income down so it almost wasn't  worth it on a money related basis. a large part of the problem is the owners been here for 20 years and started losing business about 5 years ago and blames the economy and the fact that he had staff stealing and keeping customers out. he recently tried a new decor but it looks cheesy and is kind of half ass  because it was kind of a rush job for our 20th anniversary party.

basically, the short story is we are broke with no customers! what do I do to fight a stubborn owner and a lack of customers?!

 My Response:

In addition to the actual elements of your "FUN" and "WOW FACTORS" the expenditures to produce such Concepts are critical to their bottom line success.
It's not a matter of trying this or doing that, you cannot pay spin the wheel and hope it lands on a packed night. Not in this double digit recession. "Moderate Success", is simply unacceptable.
Owners that have been in the same bar for five years or longer are "BURNT OUT". They just don't have the fire their belly anymore. When your Owner started losing money five years ago, I asked myself why he didn't sell out, take in a partner, or close down? I have a friend who owns a liquor store, he went through 60k in September- October just keeping the doors open. Now he is in a panic mode and totally despondent. The key is, THE MOMENT YOU SEE YOUR CUSTOMER COUNTS START TO EVEN GO DOWN, THE FIRST TIME YOU SEE THE REVENUE RUNNING SOUTH, THAT IS WHEN YOU ACT, NOT operating in denial, not hoping it gets better, not listening to everyone, not overreacting, but taking positive ACTION to REBRAND, REPOSITION, REINVENT.
When you say "We are broke, with no customers, what do you do to fight a stubborn owner and a lack of customers", you are swimming upstream, and there is no calm in sight.
I will never understand why people like you, dedicated, giving your all, remain at a bar or club or restaurant with an Owner who refuses to embrace "CHANGE", "FUN", "WOW", who operates ignoring the reality of his situation, and does not accept personal responsibility for his lack of leadership, financial smarts, and demise of his business?
I can only hope you see that the future is yours, that you should consider moving on to a brighter and better run food and beverage venue, who's Owner will immediately recognize your abilities, motivation, and commitment. I wish you the Very Best, but it's time to give notice and walk away. Email RichUnger@promotingnightclubs.com

CRAFT BEER EVENTS ARE THE WAY TO GO
ALL OF A SUDDEN, BEER DRINKERS ARE BORED, TIRED, FOAMED OUT, OVER THE SAME OLD LIGHT, & LITE, BEERS.
THE FASTEST GROWING SEGMENT OF THE BEER MARKET ARE "CRAFT BEERS".
THOSE UNIQUE NICHE BEERS THAT OFFER GREAT STAND ALONE QUALITY, UNIQUE BREWING AND REFRESHING TASTE. JUST WHEN THE BIG BEER NAMES ARE EXPERIENCING DECLINES IN OVERALL SALES, THE "CRAFT BEERS" ARE MAKING A HUGE IMPACT.
IT'S ALSO EXCITING TO OFFER WHAT OTHER BARS HAVE NOT CAUGHT ON TO YET.
BUT THE "CRAFT BEERS" CATER TO A NEW BEER AFECINADO, AND TO THE OLD LOYAL BEER DRINKER. WHY?
BECAUSE THEY WANT TO A GREAT NEW TASTE WITH AN ADVENTUREOUS NEW "CRAFT BEER" TWO GREAT BEERS THAT YOU SHOULD BE FEATURING ARE "BROOKLYN BROWN ALE" AND ABITA TURBODOG". LET YOUR BEERS STAND OUT AND STOP THE BASIC, BORING ARRAY OF TYPICAL BEERS, BREAK OUT FROM THE USUAL BOTTLES AND DRAFTS, TO THE NEW "IN DEMAND CRAFTS" AND "TOTALLY UNIQUE NO OTHER BAR HAS BRANDS. CRAFT YOUR BAR WITH "UNIQUE, TRENDY,
FIRST IN YOUR AREA BEERS". EMAIL RICHUNGER@PROMOTINGNIGHTCLUBS.COM

T.G. I. FRIDAY'S Are You Hiding What The Nutritional  Facts Of Your Sandwiches Are?  When Food Expert David Zinczenko asks on "The Today Show" why "T. G.I. FRIDAY'S" is REFUSING to display, disclose and discuss their fat, salt, cholesterol  content, and why they are so secretive about their sandwich nutrition disclosure? "T.G.I. FRIDAY'S REFUSES TO RESPOND.
This is the worse kind of publicity any casual chain could get.
I contacted Corporate Ownership and was unable to receive any kind of response, EITHER.
I WOULD HAVE THE CEO of "T.G.I.Friday's", either apologize and explain this major oversight, or can his tuchus, put someone in the CEO Chair who cares.
IF A RESTAURANT CHAIN WON'T TELL YOU WHAT YOUR EATING, IF THEY DON'T HAVE THE CONCERN, REGARD FOR YOU AND YOUR HEALTH, WHY WOULD YOU EAT THERE. SHAME ON "T.G.I. FRIDAY'S", MAKE SURE YOUR RESTAURANT FULLY DISCLOSES THE HEALTH FACTORS REGARDING SODIUM, FAT, CALORIES, CHOLESTEROL, DON'T BE LIKE "T.G.I. FRIDAY'S AND PLACE YOUR CUSTOMER'S HEALTH BENEATH YOUR GREED.

The Only Thing Necessary For the Triumph Of Your bar is For Good Owners To Do Nothing Or Everything but the right things.
Far too often Owners wait way too long, spend all their savings, take loans out, and go deep in debt expecting things to turn around, when they had no clue what to do, to begin with. They listen to everybody, they try this, they try that, and still no business. Either right now, before you go deep into debt, before you lose what you had, email RichUnger@promotingnightclubs.com
You have everything, everything to gain and nothing to lose.
Triumph Of Your Bar Is For Good Owners To Do Nothing, or Everything but the "RIGHT THINGS".

REWARD PROGRAMS HAVE TO OFFER "INSTANT GRATIFICATION" NOT THIS SPEND NOW WAIT FOR YOUR REWARD NONSENSE
FOOD & BEVERAGE OPERATORS MUST CREATE THEIR OWN "REWARDS /APPRECIATION/THANK YOU/GET IT NOW NOT LATER" PROGRAMS THAT PATRONS, CUSTOMERS REALIZE THERE IS NO SWAITING PERIOD, NO TIME LIMIT, NO FINE PRINT.
I HAVE CREATED "REWARDS CONCEPTS" THAT BRING BACK PATRONS WEEK AFTER WEEK, AND OFTEN MORE THAN TWICE A WEEK.
TAKE "hhgregg" THE ELECTRONICS CHAIN, THEY ARE STILL OFFERING MAIL IN REBATES, THAT IS WHY THEIR SALES WERE DOWN 20% FOR THE LAST QUARTER, NATIONWIDE CONSUMERS ARE FED UP WITH MAIL REBATES, IN FACT THE STATE OF "CT." OUTLAWED SUCH REBATES.
This is exactly why "Circuit City" went out of business.
GREED over GREAT CUSTOMER RESPECT and RESPONSE.
YET "hhgregg" AND THEIR CEO PLACES 'ARROGRANT GREED' AND A TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS, WITH THEIR MAIL IN REBATE PROGRAM.
"BEST BUY" DOES NOT OFFER MAIL REBATES, THEY GIVE THEIR CUSTOMERS "INSTANT SAVINGS" THAT MEANS YOU BUY IT AT THE PRICE AS IF YOU WERE GOING TO WAIT FOR A MAIL IN REBATE, BUT YOU GET IT NOW. FOOD AND BEVERAGE OPERATORS MUST FUNCTION ON THE EXACT SAME PREMISE. You cannot keep stringing your patrons along with fine print, dated, and outlandish requirements for them to meet, in order to be "REWARDED". The name of the game in this Food and Beverage Economic Climate is "INSTANT GRATIFICATION".
No waiting, no delaying................................ Email RichUnger@promotingnightclubs.com let him know how you "REWARD" your customers and attract new faces from other places.
