                          CINDY, What are you thinking? Seriously have you ever heard the two words "Liquor Costs"? You take the biggest night of the week Friday, and you give ladies free drinks?????? Liquor Costs,  Do you even know what yours are? Why would you use flyers, nobody looks @ them? You don't have enough Promotions because your not focusing on "FUN", "WOW FACTORS" or "FAB" at all. Learning how to promote better, is not an on the job ability. You either have The Experience, The Knowledge, The Background, The Education or you don't. You can't learn as you go. I repeat this over and over, Owners and Managers just DO NOT GET IT. It's not about "things" it's all about your Format. You sadly sound very NAIVE  and foreign to this industry? You also appear to be in way over your head. My Expertise to you: FIND SOMEONE ASAP, WHO CAN TEACH YOU, SHOW YOU, LEAD YOU AND OPENLY AND FRANKLY INFORM YOU, YOU ARE IN DESPERATE NEED TO TURN THIS BAR AROUND NOW, NOT TOMORROW. BUT RIGHT THIS MINUTE.

 Rich, I know you have heard this all before but here goes, "Help, we are constantly discounting drinks.
My Bar is  boring , it doesn't seem to draw anyone in
I have no money to promote.
My bar is a renovated  bar, over 100 yrs. old ,high overhead,not breaking even.
I just can't seem to get it going.
I have hit or miss nights, 90.00 days and 1600. days.
Just got stuck owning a bar and it needs to succeed! Seriously need advice from someone,how to I get this bar going steady.

MY RESPONSE: Heather, first, stop "DRINK DESPAIR". You can't make any money giving the bar away. How many times do I have to repeat this?????
Your bar is boring, you have no money to promote.
Either borrow the funds, beg for the cash.
Cut your overhead in half, reduce all of your expenses, renegotiate  your lease. Find a Smart, Shrewd Financially Strong, working Partner draw up an iron clad agreement, to bring this person in.
If not,  you have no choice but to close down.
You can't exist or survive on hit or miss nights.

TAKING A BIKER BAR & TRANSFORMING IT!
So, you've purchased a "Biker Bar", now you want to
clear out the bikers and bring in the spenders. It's a monumental challenge, but it can be done. It requires
patience, consistency, and discipline. None of which
"Biker Bar Patrons " usually have.  YOU don't want the "Biker Bar Stool Sitters" any longer. Fine, there is a solid, consistent process by which you clean out, clear out, and kick start the Bikers nicely, but firmly right out of your bar. I did it and it took me three straight weeks of standing right by the front door, graciously, nicely, but without hesitation advising the "Bikers" it was not their kind of bar anymore. They were not happy, but they respected the way in which the transformation was handled and rode off in their "Easy Rider" Tradition. It's very simple to remove the elephant in the room, you just have to know how to allocate the peanuts. In plain english, you must have a solid, steady, substantial 
APPROACH that you adhere to without any deviation. Clearing out the Bikers is the easy part, transforming, by bringing in the "RIGHT CROWDS" is a very, very, difficult Transformation. You don't state what your strategies are to implement this changeover? Email RichUnger@promotingnightclubs.com
 
 
Hey bro. Just moved from Vegas to _________. I am now the manager of a 6000 sq ft sports bar. This place was known as the armpit of this sleepy town. I am a partner with a friend and we have an owner who got stuck with this business by default. So in 6 weeks we have manage to stop the bleeding and plug all the leaks. We have some debt we need to dig out of. We just offset 30k of the 50k whole by dumping dirty vendors. Hacked the crew and now have built up a new one. It is turn the corner time. I am faced with I am from Vegas and have landed in the Flintsone era. Not sure how to approach the wow factor. The State Liquor control commission is hovering, they stripped the last guy, thus forcing the ownership change. I started by canceling the overplayed cover bands and clearing the schedule. I have now built a new one forcing all new genres into the valley. Original bands from country to punk, from black grass to metal. I will be seeking bigger names etc, creating an events center showcasing the best groups I can get. My research for bands has me turning the corner. However my desire for bikinis, and pleasure parties for ladies nights( guys allowed in after) are frowned upon by the State Liquor CC. my music is drawing, but that is only 2 nights revenue. help. I firmly believe no liquor disc, etc people will pay. I am charging cover when no one else is. But I will change the tired local music scene so I will stick to my guns. frustrated and feeling constricted.

WOMEN ARE THE KEY TO THIS INDUSTRY, BOTH THOSE THAT WORK FOR YOU AND THOSE THAT PATRONIZE YOUR SPORTS BAR.
YOU NEVER ONCE MENTION THE INTERNET, INTERACTION NIGHTS, HIGH ENERGY NIGHTS, CREATIVITY IN YOUR FOOD SERVICE?  YOUR NOT IN VEGAS ANYMORE ALAN, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD NOT DAZZLE, WITH DYNAMIC NIGHTS.
BUT YOU ARE OPERATING WITH NO SET OF STRATEGIES. YOU ARE RIDING BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS. YES YOU MUST REDUCE THAT DEBT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO ZERO, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, YOU NEED TO REBRAND, REINVENT, REPOSITION.

 Rich, I am Andrea, my bar is located in the Golf Course. The golfers play golf and go home. I don't have dancing, nor live bands. There is no nite life. My problem  is how to attract a nite life after the golfers leave?
 
MY RESPONSE:
                         Andrea, It's very simple! You are not giving anyone any reason to frequent your bar @ night. NONE.
You offer no dancing, you don't even need a dance floor to feature dancing. You don't have to present live bands. Andrea, the Golfers are going to come in anyway, it's the Night Life that you need "FUN" and "WOW FACTORS" and "FAB" for. It's not a matter of sending you an email.
What are you prepared to do?
Who are the demographics you are targeting?
Why isn't anyone presently frequenting your bar now?
When is your bar going to feature dancing?
Who works for you that is "HOT" , "FRIENDLY" and "GREAT BEHIND THE BAR"?
Andrea, You do not have a big problem, there is a very simple solution.
You need to focus on 9pm till closing, four nights a week.
Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
I asked you take immediate steps to packing your bar, but you chose not to. You want to suffer.
I wish you the best, knowing you should continue to expect the worse. Your not
taking any action to counter your lack of "FORMAT".
 
 
Hi Rich, I opened  a bar a four months ago  that holds 300, last night ( Friday Night) I did $270 in cover charges, and had to pay my band $1000. I book different bands every Friday and Saturday Nights. I am not drawing enough patrons to make this work. I have bands booked through the end of May. Once in a great while we have a band that packs the bar, but it is a far and few night. What do you think? Stan.

                        STAN, WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU OPEN A CLUB THAT RELIES SOLELY ON LIVE BANDS EVERY FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS? YOU BOOK COVER BANDS, YOU PAY OVER $800 TO $2000 A NIGHT FOR YOUR BANDS, YOU HAVE NO "FUN", ALL YOU HAVE ARE BANDS.
YOU HAVE NO "WOW FACTORS", ALL RELY ON ARE DIFFERENT BANDS, YOU HAVE NO "FAB", YOU JUST SUPPLY A PA SYSTEM AND LET THESE BANDS FROM YOUR VIDEOS DRESS LIKE SLOBS AND PERFORM, OFTEN, I NOTICE VERY FEW PATRONS ARE EVEN DANCING, ENJOYING THESE BANDS. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS BOOKING BANDS BUMMER?

OUTBACK MAKES A DRAMATIC COMEBACK, TALK ABOUT "WOW"

   In addition to spending between $40 million and $50 million to renovate as many as 150 Outback Steakhouse locations, the company also will spend about $15 million to $25 million on expansion with an emphasis on Bonefish Grill, which OSI hopes to grow by six to 10 units in 2011.

Another $15 million to $20 million is earmarked for infrastructure upgrades, like a new point-of-sale system in OSI�s restaurants, officials said.

For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2010, OSI reported net income of $12.7 million, compared with a net loss of $29.9 million a year earlier.

Total revenue rose 2 percent to $911 million. Domestic same-store sales rose across its four large, core brands, including gains of 2.4 percent at Outback, 9.3 percent at Bonefish, 5.4 percent at Carrabba�s and 18.4 percent at Fleming�s.

"OUTBACK" rolled out a $9.99 steak/shrimp entree that was by far the most powerful presentation, price point and plate promotion of the last five years by any casual dining establishment.

"Bonefish Grill" is killing Red Lobster, and now with "Red Lobster/Olive Garden" co-branding both formats under one roof, Darden is desperate for growth from both chains. Seems "Olive Garden's" Ravioli Promotion did not move off the dish as expected. Thankfully all the bread sticks and salad you can eat are the savior. But "Red Lobster" has serious problems with it's exterior remodeling in my opinion it is ugly and far from appealing.

Even "Carrabba's" showed excellent growth. How independents can simply over charge, under serve, and not create any "Consistent Creative Concepts" to pack their places truly, truly defies logic. Email RichUnger@promotingnightclubs.com

MY RESPONSE: FRED, FIRST, LET EVERY OTHER ESTABLISHMENT PAY SOME LAME CLUB PROMOTER FOR THE UNDER QUALITY PATRONS THEY ATTRACT, LET THEM PAY RADIO STATIONS FOR THE NOBODY LISTENS TO 30 SECOND WEAK PRODUCED SPOTS. I TOLD YOU OVER AND OVER TO REACH ABOVE THE TWO LEGENDARY CLUBS AND BRING ON "THE FUN", "THE WOW FACTORS" AND "THE FAB", BUT YOU ARE SET IN YOUR WAYS AND WOULD RATHER SUFFER. YOU ARE RUNNING SCARED, YOU ARE BURNT OUT AND YOU HAVE NO MINDSET TO OVERTAKE YOUR COMPEITITION. YOU HAVE TO REACH INSIDE YOURSELF AND PLAN YOUR ENTIRE SUMMER STRATEGIES. INSTEAD YOU ARE IN A "CLUB CAN'T CONTINUE" MODE. I TRIED TO EXCITE YOU INTO TAKING THE BUSINESS AWAY FROM THE TWO SUPPOSEDLY LEGENDARY CLUBS, I REACHED OUT TO YOU, BUT YOU WANT TO SUFFER. WHY IS IT SO EASY FOR ME TO SEE WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, YET SO DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO COMPREHEND, ABSORB AND IMPLEMENT? 

 

 

Why Would Any Brand New Nightclub Send out an email " WIN A FREE HAPPY HOUR, JUST SEND US A PIC TO POST ON FACEBOOK OF YOU AND TEN FRIENDS". What is this Owner thinking? The Club is brand new!! There HAPPY HOUR should be packed with young professionals,  movers & shakers, mostly Women. But instead, this "Hoping We have a Happy Hour Hack of A Lure Marketing sham". Shame on this Owner. That's like guessing how many jelly beans are in the jar. I mean come on !!!!!!!

 

 DRESS CODE vs UNDRESSY CODE

 With this generation, many upscale restaurants are learning fast, this demographic it's not "REQUIRED" but "REQUESTED" dress that is being implemented. I refer to strictly restaurants with the above statement. The Upscale Eateries are no longer demanding tie and jacket apparel appropriate wear. They are bending and bowing to the economic conditions, that spending dining patrons do not desire to dress up to dine out any longer. They are not dropping down to athletic wear and sneakers, but they are being far more casual in their policies towards men's fashions.

With Nightclubs, I urge Owners not to break their Dress Code or deviate from it for any reason. Why? because in the club format, you let a slob in, they act like a slob, talk like a slob and tip like a slob. You all of a sudden are known as a "
Ghetto" club because regardless of race or religion, you are letting in slobs who are destroying your physical atmosphere, your overall image and chasing female patrons away in droves. There can be no modification in a bar or club's "After 10pm" Dress Code when a Night Life Adventure awaits. I don't care if it's Vince Vaughn, no baseball caps turned to the front, the back or the side are allowed in. You don't bend or amend your Dress Code for anybody. Stick to your principles it always pays off. Don't panic promote, stay the course, and people will respect your bar or club because of your own consistency in holding your bar or club in high regard. YOU RUN TO RADIO, BUT IT DOES NOT BRING IN ENOUGH PEOPLE TO EVEN JUSTIFY WHAT YOU SPEND, RADIO FORCES YOU TO RUN THIRTY SECOND SPOTS THAT ARE TOTALLY WORTHLESS, THE VOICE THEY USE ON YOUR SPOT IS THE SAME VOICE THAT DOES EVERY SPOT ON THEIR AIR. IS THIS REALLY WHAT YOU WENT INTO THIS BUSINESS FOR? TO SIMPLY YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR EXPENSES, BUT YOU TAKE NO ACTION TO REDUCE THEM. YOU SCREAM ABOUT YOUR LAME STAFF, BUT YOU DO NOT CLEAN HOUSE.  I've worked at a local nightclub for the last two years. I started out 
cocktail waitressing( when we actually had the business and need for 
one) we offered live music twice a week and locally recognized as 
being" best place for dancing", as well as live music. The club is 
family owned and operated since 1988. Now I'm the only bartender 
outside the family. The owners have other means of income on the 
property( motel, rental properties) and I'm beginning to see that 
they've givin up. They don't understand that I care about this place 
and it's my ONLY income. I know the potential is there and have seen 
it first hand. We have the largest building in the city, concert 
quality sound( although we haven't had a band since last summer), and 
our establishment used to be, and should be the best around. I'm 
meeting with my boss later this week in attempt to persuade him to 
demote his own brother that currently is supposed to be running his 
bar, and give me the opportunity to manage this place. I'm good at 
what I do, I do have a base of regulars on my shifts, but the minute I 
leave the whole place empties out. Can you give me some advice or 
balls on how to approach him at our meeting? Please help me, Marcie

                         WHEN FAMILY OWNS A BAR AND ADDITIONAL BUSINESSES THAT ARE PART OF THE BAR, THEY OFTEN FORGET THAT THE MONEY IS BEHIND THE BAR. THESE OWNERS SINCE 1988 ARE SET IN THEIR WAYS, YOU WANT A BROTHER TO TURN ON HIS OWN BLOOD AND PUT YOU IN CHARGE OF THE BAR, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. IF THE BAR FAILS AND CLOSES, SO BE IT. THESE OWNERS DO NOT CARE. THEY PROBABLY OWN THE PROPERTY, THEY HAVE NO DESIRE TO SEE THIS BAR TURN AROUND MAKE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND PACK THE PLACE. IF THE MINUTE YOU LEAVE THE WHOLE PLACE EMPTIES OUT, YOU SHOULD GO TO A COMPETING BAR AND BRING ALL YOUR REGULARS WITH YOU. BECAUSE SAD BUT HONESTLY, THEY DON'T CARE. THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU IS TO FIND ANOTHER BAR, AND GO. RUN. JUMP. BOLT. EVEN IF BY A MIRACLE THEY WOULD GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO RUN THE BAR, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? THEY WILL NOT SPEND ANY MONEY, THEY WILL NOT IMPLEMENT "FUN", "WOW FACTORS" OR "FAB",  THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THESE ELEMENTS OF THE BAR FORMAT ARE. HIS BROTHER IS SIMPLY DRAWING A PAYCHECK, PROBABLY DRINKING DURING HIS WORK HOURS AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THIS BAR IN THE LEAST. YOU CARE TOO MUCH AND YOU ARE NOT USING COMMON SENSE OR BEING PRACTICAL. YOU CANNOT BY YOURSELF REBRAND, REBUILD AND REPOSITION THIS BAR, SADLY THESE OWNERS DO NOT WANT THIS BAR TO SUCCEED. GET OUT AND GO TO A FRESH NEW BARTENDERING JOB WHERE YOUR REGULARS WILL FOLLOW, YOU WILL BE HAPPY, AND YOU WILL BE HIGHLY REGARDED. GOOD LUCK. CANCEL THE MEETING, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME, THEY DON'T WANT TO SPEND A PENNY THEY ARE CONTENT WITH THIS BAR AS IT IS. GO WHERE YOU WILL BE APPRECIATED AND EMBRACED. We would like to thank each and everyone of you for making this a great 6 1/2 years. It has been an AMAZING ride, and one that we feel is ending too soon. The memories made, friendships forged, laughs shared and tears cried have made Hangar 17 special to us, and hopefully all of you too.

We appreciate all of the support we have received  over the years, and are apologetic things ended so abruptly. Running a business of this magnitude was a bigger challenge than we ever imagined, and our inability to succeed will never be blamed on the lack of spirit, personality and dedication of you all.

We now look forward to sitting on the same side of the bar with all of you, and telling stories that start with 'Remember that time at Hangar when...'

I'm pretty sure we all have a few of those...

  WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE WAS THEIR BLUNT, HONEST, AND OPEN STATEMENT " RUNNING A BUSINESS OF THIS MAGNITUDE WAS A BIGGER CHALLENGE THAN WE EVER IMAGINED AND OUR INABILITY TO SUCCEED WILL NEVER BE BLAMED ON THE LACK OF SPIRIT, PERSONALITY AND DEDICATION OF YOU ALL".

IT TAKES, RELENTLESS, CONSISTENT, BLOOD, SWEAT, TEARS AND TENACITY, ALONG WITH THE KEY ELEMENT "CREATIVITY, WITHOUT IT YOU HAVE THE SAME FORMAT AS EVERY OTHER BAR. IT IS SAD TO SEE ANY BAR CLOSE, SIX AND A HALF YEARS IS A NICE RUN, BUT FAR TOO OFTEN OWNERS BECOME COMPLACENT, THEY GET LAZY, THEY LOSE INTEREST, THEY GET BURNT OUT, THEY GET FED UP, THEY GET BEAT DOWN, THEY LOSE THEIR MOMENTUM.

I WISH THESE GENTLEMEN THE BEST IN LIFE. I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE CONTACTED ME EARLIER IN THEIR BUSINESS LIFE.

 SURVIVING ON BANDS ALONE

 SO YOU OWN A CLUB AND ALL YOU DO FOUR NIGHTS A WEEK IS BOOK BANDS, BANDS, AND MORE BANDS. BUT SINCE THESE BANDS PLAY ALL OVER YOUR AREA, AND MANY OF THE OTHER VENUES DON'T CHARGE A COVER CHARGE, YOU PLACE THE BURDEN OF THE COST OF THE BAND RIGHT ON YOUR BAR SALES. HOW DUMB IS THAT? CAN'T YOU EVEN VISUALIZE PACKING YOUR PLACE WITHOUT A BAND? CAN'T YOU EVEN THINK OUTSIDE THE BAND, AND INSIDE "THE FUN", "THE WOW FACTORS" AND "THE FAB", SADLY, AND TRAGICALLY, IT'S NO WONDER SO MANY PLACES ARE GOING TO CLOSE THIS YEAR. OWNERS WHO HAVE NO DIRECTION, NO  STRATEGIES, NO TAKE BACK THE NIGHTS MENTALITY. YOU CANNOT MAKE MONEY EVERY NIGHT YOUR OPEN WHEN YOU HAVE LIVE ENTERTAINMENT OVERHEAD. CONCERT TICKET SALES ARE WAY DOWN, CD SALES ARE AT SCARY SALES LEVELS, PEOPLE TODAY IN MAY OF 2011 WANT YOU TAKE THEM AWAY FROM WAR, THE BUDGET CRISIS, THE DEBT CIELING DEBATE, THE PRICE OF FOOD & GAS, THEY WANT TO ESCAPE TO THE NIGHT LIFE ADVENTURE. THE PROBLEM IS YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO LAUNCH IT. YOU WOULD RATHER PAY A STRANGER WHO RIPS YOU OFF OF YOUR DOOR, AND BRINGS IN THE TOTALLY WRONG CROWD, THAT DESTROYS YOUR PLACE PHYSICALLY AND IMAGE WISE, THAN FOLLOW A "GAME PLAN OF FUN, WOW, & FAB". YOU HAVE A WIFE, KIDS AND YOUR NOT MAKING MONEY LIKE YOU WERE, BECAUSE YOUR NOT IN THE SAME STATE OF MIND YOU WERE. SO WHAT ARE YOU PREPARED TO DO? A NEW RESTAURANT/CLUB OPENS, THE OWNER RESORTS TO DRINK SPECIALS, A DJ, AND CLUB PROMOTERS, HIS NIGHTS ARE AWFUL, HIS PATRONS NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, WITH VERY FEW WOMEN CUSTOMERS, HIS CINCO DE MAYO FORMAT, A BAND AND SOME DRINK SPECIALS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS OWNER? ALL THAT MONEY HE PUT INTO BUILDING HIS PLACE AND HE HASN'T THE FIRST CREATIVE CONCEPT TO PACK HIS OWN PLACE?
