IT'S NOT AN "IDEA", IT'S A CONCEPT WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR BAR AND EXPAND FOOD SERVICE TO PATRONS SEATED AT YOUR BAR, YOUR COMMUNITY TABLES, YOUR HIGH TOPS. IT'S NOT AN IDEA, WHEN YOU STOP OFFERING OVER WITH KARAOKE, DARTS, BEER PONG, OPEN MIC, IT'S COMMON SENSE. PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK DO YOU HAVE ANY "NEW IDEAS"? MY ANSWER IS "NO".
I DO TAKE MUSIC, FASHION, ENIGMAS, ICONS, TRENDS, VIRAL BUZZ, CULTURAL OVERNIGHT SENSATIONS, AND CREATE "FUN", "WOW FACTORS" AND "FAB", BUT NO "IDEAS", THEY JUST DON'T EXIST.
WHEN A NEW PIZZA EATERY, THAT WAS BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP COSTING OVER $600,000. STARTS LESS THAN SIX MONTHS OPEN, OFFERING JAZZ ON MONDAY NIGHTS, IT'S LIKE MIXING VINEGAR AND WATER.
  FIRST, MONDAYS ARE THE WORSE NIGHT TO LAUNCH ANY NEW CONCEPT.
 SECOND PUTTING CHEESY SIGNS IN THE GROUND THE SIZE OF "FOR SALE REALTOR SIGNS" TO ADVERTISE THIS EVENT THE SAME DAY AS THE EVENT IS PURE DUMB.
THIRD, TRYING TO BLEND JAZZ WITH A PIZZATERIA, LIKE A CAFETERIA THAT CATERS TO PIZZA AND SUBS, ADDING LIVE JAZZ DEFIES "NIGHT LIFE POTENTIAL OR PROFITABILITY".
AS I HAVE SAID OVER AND OVER, JAZZ IS AN EXCEPTIONAL GENRE OF MUSIC, BUT JAZZ AFFECINADOS DO NOT DRINK, THEY SIT, GROOVE TO THE BEAT, BUT THEY DON'T SPEND.
I DON'T SEE A JAZZ LOVER ORDERING PIZZA AND JAMMING TO MILES DAVIS. THIS PIZZA PLACE IS SUFFERING, TOO MUCH MONEY WAS INVESTED IN IT, THE OWNER IS PAYING CBS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS EACH MONTH  FOR A BILLBOARD A STREET SOUTH OF HIS LOCATION. POTENTIAL PATRONS HAVE ALREADY DRIVEN PAST HIS PLACE, AND THEN THEY SEE THE BILLBOARD. WHAT IS THIS OWNER THINKING? IS THIS A COLLECTION OF HIS "IDEAS"? 
 A LOUNGE THAT AT BEST HOLDS MAYBE 150 PATRONS, IS USING A CLUB PROMOTER. WHAT KIND OF "IDEA" IS IT, THAT YOU AS AN OWNER OF AN UPSCALE LOUNGE IN A MAJOR HEAVY TRAFFIC DOWNTOWN LOCATION, CAN'T EVEN DRAW 150 PATRONS ON A REGULAR BASIS, YOUR "IDEA" IS TO PAY A SO CALLED CLUB PROMOTER TO DO THIS FOR YOU?
A NIGHTCLUB OWNER WITH A GREAT LOCATION NEAR A HUGE MILITARY BASE, REFUSES TO REMODEL, MAKEOVER AND PRESENT A CLEAN, FRESH, UPDATED PLACE TO ATTACT CUSTOMERS, HIS "IDEA" IS TO REMAIN A DIVE BAR AND SINK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BAR WORLD. WHILE THE MAJORITY OF BAR OWNERS SO CALLED "IDEAS" IS TO "BAR BEG" BY LOWERING PRICES OR GIVING AWAY BEER OR DRINKS, THE IRONY IS CALL AND TOP SHELF BRAND SALES ARE SOARING. THAT'S RIGHT, VODKA, RUM, TEQUILA, POPULAR BRAND SALES ARE UP, UP, UP. WHILE YOUR "IDEA" IS GIVE AWAY THE WELL, THE CHEAPEST LIQUOR YOU SERVE, MAJOR LIQUOR BRANDS ARE POURING, CUSTOMERS ARE ORDERING.

MY NO NONSENSE RESPONSES TO ALL FOUR:
 
Linda, a one paragraph email with absolutely no specifics serves no purpose. I can't even begin to respond to you, because you think that simply stating you want "FUN" and "WOW FACTORS", but don't enlighten me as to the location of the club, it's present status, it's history, it's marketing, it's image, it's genre of music, it's marketing, I can't pull a rabbit out of a hat. Next time you are serious, have your Owner contact me one on one, because your approach serves no results.
 
Kathy, what kind of bar or club do you operate? 14 Years, Congrats. But what is your format, who are you attracting, what is the history of this club, how does the college community look upon this club, again, this time in two sentences, you now want specifics without providing me any? Please if your going to ask, then be prepared to tell your story in factual updated, current terms.
 
 Thomas, You have a Promotions Company, your client is a new owner with no cash flow, cocky chef, instead of being concerned with the back of the house, he thinks he knows all about the FOH, who gave him authority to approve or disapprove of the promotions? Why would they keep hiring more people, "in case" they get busy? You have to be compelling and convincing in your ability to entice, excite and invite patrons to party at your club. The Owner loves acoustic  music, great, he should play some on his guitar at home. You have said the exact same things I write about, I try to write in black and white so that there is no gray area in my thinking. Sorry I do not have a book out, you see what will work in Akron , Ohio will not work in Houston, Texas. You are in a no win situation. If your Owner has no money, why even consider working for him or her?
 
 
Finally, Brenda, You are giving away free beer and offering "BYOB",  you have no liquor license, you have live nude girls, your Gentlemen's Club has a terrible reputation, I can only guess due to the failure to enforce a dress code, the behavior of the patrons, the reputation of the place, the image of the place, the overall disregard for civility, the need for a zero tolerance policy, the lack of "Quality" young ladies. You don't need a "WOW FACTOR", you need "FUN", you desperately need "WOW FACTORS" aka Premier Promotions, Themes, Events, Parties, Concepts, Contests, Celebrations, Gatherings, Happenings, just have nude girls and giving away beer does not pack your Gentlemen's Club, nor make you Great Cash Flow. You send me a one paragraph email with no specifics and you want me to go "PRESTO" here's the "WOW FACTORS". Brenda, The summer months are slow for many Gentlemen's Clubs, unless you have a Powerful Promotions Plan you are going to continue to have slow nights. You have to REBRAND, REPOSITION and REINVENT a Gentlemen's Club that has a terrible reputation. It does not happen overnight, it takes blood, sweat, tears, and being relentless. A SPORTS BAR STUCK IN A FORMAT WITH NO  FLEXIBLE FUTURE BIZ!
 Hey, I have a few questions for you if you have the time to answer them. I like your comments on facts in the alcohol scene. We as a sports bar are doing good 10 months a year but in June and July we do bad on the most part comparing it to the other months out of the year. What can we change about our place that can get people here? We are so packed throughout basketball, football, and the beginning of baseball but that dies off in the month of May. We only advertise with one company and they are a local mailer that only goes to new neighbors that move in within 3 zip codes near us. We really don't pay that much for that, and the turn out is great. We have in the mailer $10.00 gift certificate . Other then that we just are out there for our name. We have a lot of people coming here to "pre game" but not staying they are going else where. We can hold 388 on the inside and 156 on the outside patio. It's so funny when the winter time is here everyone is begging about the outside patio being open, then when end of May, June, and July it's not filled with people. We have the same thoughts on drink specials, we only have Happy Monday Through Friday from 3 to 7 and we only do $2.00 bottles and $1.00 off all drafts and mixed drinks.Thanks, Peter 
 
MY REPONSE: What you can change is your "Sports Bar" mind set. You do nothing to expand, enhance and exercise your format  to engage fresh new faces and not the same old Pre Game Sitters. Your marketing consists of an outdated form called "Direct Mail", of course when you include a $10 Gift Certificate your residual results are going to be above the typical "Direct Mail" responses.
Being "Out there for just your name" is a very negative way in which to expect to generate business. Your name is carved in stone as a place to go for a game, or a Pre Game, and then bolt out the door. When Patrons in cold weather beg for your patio, yet, when the weather warms up and your patio is dead, that tells you, no "FUN", no "WOW FACTORS", no "FAB" no reason @ all for anyone to frequent your outside patio area. You should have 200 patrons out there on late afternoons and on weekends. Your missing the deck entirely. There's nothing  funny about it, your losing roughly $50,000. plus. Your Happy Hour ends way too early, why chase people out the door, and then sit idle for hours until a game starts? Why chase people out the door, and then sit dead because there is no game that night? 
Unfortunately your "Sports Bar" suffers from "Just Sports Syndrome". You have done NOTHING, to diverse your format, so that you attract Women,Women, and more Women. Who wants a bunch of Joe six packs drinking beer, eating wings and leaving before the game even starts? You have nothing to offer. Email RichUnger@promotingnightclubs.com If you want the TRUTH!
 
EXACTLY WHY YOU DON'T EVER WORK WITH CLUB PROMOTERS!
Hi I've been given the chance to promote at a local club every Thursday night, I have looked at your site and it looks very good. I was hoping that you may be able to give me some advice please as to what would be most successful and bring in a big crowd.

MY RESPONSE: Michael, seriously, why would you be given the "chance" to promote at a local club every Thursday Night, when you have no clue what to do? Honestly, you want my Expertise, as to what "would be most successful and bring in a crowd"? Why did you offer to promote a night, if you have no clue what to do? Why would you put this Owner in the position of losing money, having nobody in his club, because you are not qualified, experienced, knowledgeable, or educated, in the Creation of "FUN", the Formatting of "WOW FACTORS" and the Directing of "FAB", let alone how to market, produce, promote, present and pack this Club? This is exactly what I have no faith, no interest and no need of club promoters.
What you should do, is apply for all the positions a club has to offer
A. Bar Back wash glasses, mop floors, Ice down the bars
B. Bartender, learn how to tend bar
C. DJ, watch, listen, learn how to spin
D. Door Host, grasp what it takes to work the door
E. Marketing Director, go through all the avenues of media to master how to market the club
F. Finally, Manage a Club, see what encompasses the overall operation and logistics of running a club, then maybe, maybe you can even consider tackling a Night.
Because right now the only situation you should consider is being a patron at a club.

  BUT, HER HUSBAND, HE HAS SEEN THE FUTURE, AND HIS VISION IS THAT OF A MORE AGGRESSIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS ATTRACTING WOMEN, HE KNOWS THAT  OFFERING THE USUAL BEERS, THE REGULAR NIGHTS, THE TYPICAL BAR FARE, THE PREDICTABLE ARE GOING TO CAUSE THEIR ENTIRE INVESTMENT TO GO DOWN IN FLAMES. HE LOVES HIS WIFE, BUT IS TORN BETWEEN MOVING FOWARD AND PACIFYING HER AT THE SAME TIME.
SO HE CONTACTS ME. AFTER TWO CONVERSATIONS, SHE FINALLY GRASPS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING THE SAME AS EVERY OTHER BAR, OR STANDING WAY ABOVE THE FRAY, BY GOING BEYOND THE USUAL. SHE IS RELUCTANT, UNTIL THE FIRST WEDNESDAY THAT HER AND HUBBY ROLL OUT "THE FUN", THEIR BAR IS PACKED.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY DRINK SPECIAL.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY CHEAP BEER.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY SAME OLD LOCAL BAND.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY TEXAS HOLD EM TOURNAMENT.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY OPEN MIC NIGHT.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY DART LEAGUE.
NOT BECAUSE OF ANY KARAOKE.
BUT RATHER IT'S THE PREMIER PROMOTION, THAT WAS BRAND NEW TO THEIR AREA, THAT NO OTHER BAR HAD EVER HOSTED, THAT PRIMARILY WOMEN FLOCKED TO, THAT CREATED A WALL TO WALL CROWD, THAT BROUGHT IN GREAT CASH FLOW, WITH THE RIGHT FACES AND NOT THE DISGRACES.
IT WAS ALL ABOUT IMPLEMENTING 'THE FUN".
IT TOOK ONE FULL MONTH OF ADVANCE PUMPING, PUSHING, PROMOTING, TOTALLY PREOCCUPIED WITH CREATING STREET BUZZ, WEB WONDERMENT, AND DOMINATING THEIR AREA CATCHING EVERY COMPETING BAR OFF BALANCE. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE, BETWEEN DOING IT THE WAY YOU'VE SEEN IT OVER AND OVER DONE, OR ROLLING OUT WHAT'S NEVER BEFORE BEEN DONE.     
 
 
HI RICH, I need your advice, I have been paying a so called group of club promoters $1000 a week salary, they are doing nothing to bring patrons into my club. I did not sign any agreement, I just shook their hands and let them promote my night life. It's not happening. It's not going anywhere, we are slow and the people they are bringing in do not spend, nor do they tip. My staff is ready to quit, I am totally dumbfounded. Any Words of wisdom?  I await your response,William
 
MY RESPONSE:
                            William, right now, pick up the phone, text, email these so called "club promoters" for a face to face meeting.
Once they show up, seat them, cool, calm, collectively FIRE THEM.
Very simply, you are totally dissatisfied with their lack of results.
What they said they would do, they have not done. The crowds they said would pack your club, have not even packed the bar stools at your bar. FYI, nobody, nobody, nooooooooooooooooooooooooobody puts so called "club promoters" on salary. Nobody, nobody, nooooooobody pays so called "club promoters" $1000 a week. They are not your employees, they are outsiders taking your money with no viable results of any kind. Of course "it's not happening". What did you expect them to do? You have a potential MUTINY on your hands from your staff, who not only are not making enough money to fill their gas tanks, but see you paying these clowns this kind of money while they stand there all night suffering. William, I am speechless. What on earth were you thinking? You are out $1000 every week before you even take in the first $1. Totally insane in the brain. ( Shaking head in disbelief)

SMALL PLATES, MENU UPDATES, BAR APPS & MINIMIZING BACK OF THE HOUSE OVERHEAD
"Small plates" are the patron's pleasure right now. Far too many independent and chain casual, fast casual, upscale, every format of food service is missing out on "Small Plate" Service. The top steak houses, the legendary fish bistros are all finally catering to "SMALL DISH" Customers and "Bar APPS" Patrons with specific bar menu items. I create these menus and increase sales by anywhere from
50% to 100% it's all in the price, the quality, the quantity, the presentation. Stop giving away the bar, Stop ignoring food sales, what you don't comprehend is, if party patrons do not eat @ your night spot they are going to late nite eat somewhere else.
And it's a brand new avenue of income for you.
Stop being lazy, lame, and lax in your dedication, relentlessness and commitment to thriving in these challenging food and beverage times.
