EVERY MONTH YOU HAVE TO HOST A HUGE OVER THE TOP PROMOTION.
FOR ONCE STOP THE WINE, BEER, LIQUOR SPECIALS, CLUBS, FOR ONCE STOP LETTING LADIES IN FREE, ALL OF YOU STOP THE PRICE PANIC AND RESTAURANTS STOP THE FOOD FIGHT PRICE WAR. WHEN YOUR AN INDEPENDENT RESTAURANT YOU CAN DO WHAT THE CHAINS CAN'T AND WON'T. YOU DON'T SEE "OUTBACK", "RED LOBSTER", "BONEFISH" OR ANY OTHER HOSTING NIGHT LIFE ADVENTURES AFTER THEIR FOOD SERVICE ENDS.
BUT YOU CAN CHANGE, ADAPT, MAKE TENS IF NOT A FEW HUNDRED THOUSAND MORE A YEAR, BY ADDING WHAT THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE BRINGS TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, WITHOUT ALL THE HEADACHES OF THE BACK OF THE HOUSE.
YOU DON'T NEED A BAND, YOU DON'T NEED HIP HOP, YOU DON'T NEED A CLUB PROMOTER, YOU DON'T NEED RADIO SPOTS, NONE OF IT.
YOU WANT WOMEN, AND MORE WOMEN, AND EVEN MORE WOMEN, AS WELL AS MALE SPENDERS. BUT YOU WANT TO PRESENT THESE NIGHTS IN A STYLISH, CONTROLLED FORMAT, WHERE YOU HAVE NO HASSLES, NO HEADACHES, NO HEAD ON PROBLEMS. YOU USE YOUR BAR AS A SIDE ELEMENT OF REVENUE, INSTEAD OF A MAIN POINT OF CASH FLOW.
YOU DON'T NEED TO ATTEND SOME BAR SHOW IN VEGAS TO SHOW YOU HOW? WHY SPEND ALL THAT $ ON AIR FARE, HOTELS, MEALS, EVEN GAMBLE, WHEN IT'S SPRING BREAK AND YOU NEED TO BE IN YOUR PLACE!  Rich we are a College Monster Club.
 We usually have a theme every other week but college is not in session right now as we are a "college party'
 Owners refuse to spend the money to bring in celebs, performances, etc. Sound and lighting systems are "ancient' and half only work. The club is beautiful - if it were 1998! Waitresses are not as fast and efficient along with the bartenders. Drink prices are a bit steep. 
In past years this building was under 4 different names and had generated weekly crowds of a minimum of 1000 people to 2000 people. Now we can't break 1000 even on a Grand Opening night. I was the DJ there for 15 years and now am the Promotions manager and know what the crowds want to see - I'm just dealing with new owners who don't want to spend the money to make the necessary   changes. Also this club was notorious for having a ONE night a week party - SATURDAYS and we still do that but the owners want to push more nights with the same style format.
We are a college party and the ONLY 18+ party in the area. The facility is big enough to accommodate    this type of crowd but there is a major lack is eagerness to promote from the promoters because they get promised things and the owners never deliver. Some have suggested I get out now and find a new party at a new venue.

YOUR COMMUNITY CONSISTS OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS, YOUNG BLUE COLLAR WORKERS, THE DEMOGRAPHICS THAT YOU CATER TO, ARE THE GUESTS, YOUR OWNERS WANT.  WHY SHOULD THE OWNERS WASTE MONEY BRINGING IN CELEBS, OR PERFORMANCES WHEN THEY CAN MAKE FAR MORE MONEY, BRING IN FAR MORE PATRONS BY SIMPLY HOSTING PREMIER PROMOTIONS, EVENTS, PARTIES, HAPPENINGS, CELEBRATIONS, GATHERINGS, CONTESTS AND CONCEPTS? IF YOUR SOUND AND LIGHTS ARE ANCIENT, THIS CLUB USE TO ATTRACT UP TO 2000 PEOPLE AND NOW EVEN FOR THE GRAND OPENING DREW ONLY 1000, WHY ARE YOU THERE? YOU HAVE BEEN THE DJ THERE FOR 15 YEARS AND NOW YOU AER THE PROMOTIONS MANAGER AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT? YOU CANNOT BUILD MORE NIGHTS WITH THE SAME FORMAT. LETTING IN 18 PLUS IS NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT, THEY CAN'T DRINK, THEY ONLY TRY TO GET AN ILLEGAL DRINK ALL NIGHT, THE ONLY INCOME YOU OBTAIN FROM THEM IS THE COVER CHARGE WHY CAN'T YOU ATTRACT ENOUGH OF A CROWD 21 AND UP WHO CAN DRINK LEGALLY? WHAT A SWITCH THE CLUB PROMOTERS NEVER RECEIVE WHAT THE OWNERS PROMISE THEM? BUT I AM CONFUSED IF YOU ARE THE PROMOTIONS MANAGER AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE LOCAL MARKET WANTS, WHY ARE THE OWNERS EVEN WORKING WITH SO CALLED CLUB PROMOTERS AT ALL? SOME SUGGEST YOU GO OUT AND FIND ANOTHER VENUE WHERE YOU CAN THROW ONE PARTY EVERY OTHER WEEK? I THINK YOU SHOULD DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE. 15 YEARS AS A DJ AND NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU ARE GIVEN THE TITLE OF "PROMOTIONS MANAGER" BUT THE OWNERS WON'T LET YOU DO YOUR JOB? YOUR PERFORMANCE EQUIPMENT IS OLD, OUTDATED AND THEY WON'T SPEND TO UPDATE. FINALLY IN PAST YEARS, THE BUILDING HAS GONE THROUGH FOUR DIFFERENT NAMES? CHRIS, IT'S UP TO YOU. BUT IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD NOT QUIT UNTIL YOU FIND ANOTHER JOB TO TAKE? THE PROBLEM WITH ACTING WITH EMOTION OVER LOGIC IS YOU END UP OUT ON YOUR TUCHUS AND YOU HAVE NO PAYCHECK COMING IN. BASED ON THE WAY THESE OWNERS ARE OPERATING, I DO NOT GIVE THEM LONG TO REMAIN IN BUSINESS. GOOD LUCK, BUT YOU NEED TO PUT YOUR PRIORITIES FOR YOURSELF FIRST.

Hey Rich! I was just looking at your site and thought I should send you an email. I need help coming up with a three or four week promotion that will get people in the club earlier than 11 pm on a Sunday night. Here is info on our club.

 
  • Been open in  ____________ (population is something like 1.1 million) for nine years (November 2002).
  • Capacity is 762.
  • Age group is 18-25 college crowd.
  • We are definitely known in the city as a young club, but also one of the safest and the busiest out of all the big nightclubs in the city.
  • Our format is top 40 mashups and remixes.
In the past some of our successful promotions have been DJ competitions and bikini contests, where the people competing help drive people in the club early. We do these annually. Each one runs for four-five weeks.

 
What I need help with is coming up with more promotions similar to those. Something that is low cost on our end that will drive people through our doors early. We open at 8 pm. Sundays are our industry night ($3.50 drinks all night). We are the only club open on a Sunday. There are a couple of smaller venues (restaurant/bars) that are open, but we always see their staff after they get cut because it's too slow.

 
Sundays have been getting slower and slower lately. It just seems like nobody is going out on Sundays in _______________ anymore. I realize that our crowd being primarily college students doesn't help with class Monday morning, as well as people having to work, but I've gotta come up with something here.

MY RESPONSE: RJ, THE ONLY SUNDAY NIGHTS YOUR CLUB SHOULD BE OPEN ARE WHEN MONDAYS ARE A LEGAL HOLIDAY. SUNDAY NIGHTS OTHERWISE ARE NOT WORTH OPENING ESPECIALLY WITH NO WEEKLY FOOTBALL ON SUNDAY NIGHTS.
I WOULD TAKE ANOTHER WEEK NIGHT AND BUILD THAT NIGHT UP.
IT TAKES A FULL MONTH TO EVEN GENERATE A NIGHT'S BUZZ, BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN SEE OR REALIZE VIABLE RESULTS. YOU WANT INSTANT PROMOTION GRATIFICATION, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN ON SUNDAY NIGHTS. INDUSTRY NIGHTS ARE FOR EMPLOYEES OF OTHER FOOD AND OR BEVERAGE ESTABLISHMENTS TO PARTY AT YOUR VENUE, $3.50 DRINKS ALL NIGHT ARE FINE, BUT AS FOR BUILDING UP SUNDAY NIGHTS, WHEN MONDAY IS NOT A LEGAL HOLIDAY, FORGETABOUTIT.

IF A CLUB CAN'T DRAW 200 TO 2000 21 AND UP PATRONS IN COLLEGE TOWNS, AND 60% TO 70% OF THAT DEMOGRAPHICS BEING WOMEN, THEN YOU NEED TO STOP, THINK, EVALUATE, REVAMP, REFORMAT, REINVENT AND REPOSITION A WEEK NIGHT, AS FOR *SUNDAY NIGHTS, CLOSE. (UNLESS MONDAY IS A LEGAL HOLIDAY) ANOTHER MUCH SMARTER TACTIC WOULD BE TO HAVE A 19 AND UNDER NIGHT ON THESE SUNDAY NIGHTS, THEY DON'T HAVE SCHOOL ON MONDAYS, YOU CAN CHARGE THEM UP TO $20 AT THE DOOR IF YOU FOLLOW MY "FUN", MY "VOW TO WOW FACTORS" AND MY "FAB".

I HAVE DESIGNED A FAR MORE ADVANCED, AHEAD OF THE CURVE CONCEPT THAT TAKES THE OLD , OUTDATED, "VIP ROOM" TO LEVELS FAR ABOVE THE PERSENT SUCH AREA. "THE VIP ROOM" AS IT IS NOW IN 99.9% OF THE CLUBS IS OVER, IN THE PAST AND
SO PREDICTABLE, IT NO LONGER HAS ANY IMPACT. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY PATRONS ARE NOT FLOCKING TO THAT AREA ANYMORE, BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN THERE, SAT THERE, DRANK THERE, AND IT JUST DOESN'T HAVE ANY "WOW" AT ALL ANYMORE.

 Hi Rich, I read your site and shake my head.
 Karaoke, local bands, sport events specials with raffles.
We currently are doing no promotions.
Our Karaoke and Band Nights are not as busy as expected.
I'm new at this business, have a face book page and web site up.
Have tried radio and coupon books.
NOTHING WORKED.I am new at this business, just opened this sports bar and grille six months ago and very disappointed, I need to know how to bring people here?

I opened a night club in ____________in 2011.  This town is notorious for honky tonk hitching post establishments which as a 32 year old single female doesn't particularly enjoy visiting.  So, I brought a trendy, sexy Dance Club to the area. First three months were UNBELIEVABLE to say the least.  Business boomed, and we we're actually doing well.  We are a private club with a 2am drinking license.  The competition "___________________" has a 5am drinking license.  So, after we close they are getting our customers.  No problem.  Now however business is extremely slow and I'm unsure of what I need to do.  This town is so different from where I came from in _________.  People LOVED getting dressed up and going to a "glitter and glasses" bar.  Here?  Not so much.  Rednecks with 4ft fuzzy beards, tattoos everywhere and such that visit walmart on the first of the month to use their food stamps seem to be increasingly populating the place.  My door guys seem to have a serious issue turning away the "losers" that try to get in.  then when the do get in and I question them why they let them in I get shrugged shoulders.  I need some serious advice on trying to get back what we had this summer.  Customers complain about the drink prices and that's partially because they're broke and paying for our import specials in dimes and nickels...I'm not exaggerating either.  Please help me! YOUR DOORMEN HAVE A PROBLEM TURNING AWAY POTENTIAL GUESTS THAT YOU DO NOT EVEN WANT ADMITTED? THEN WHEN YOU ASK YOUR DOOR STAFF WHY THEY LET THOSE PEOPLE IN, THEY SHRUG THEIR SHOULDERS?
WHY DON'T YOU SHRUG YOUR LIPS AND SAY "YOUR FIRED". VERY SIMPLE, VERY QUICK, VERY EASY SOLUTION TO EMPLOYEES WHO SHOW YOU NO RESPECT. YOU DON'T NEED SERIOUS ADVICE, YOU NEED "EXPERTISE" AND LOTS OF IT. CUSTOMERS COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DRINK PRICES, BECAUSE YOUR FORMAT IS NON EXISTENT. IT'S NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BROKE.
I CAN'T HELP YOU WITH YOUR MENTALITY, OR ATTITUDE.

RICH, I AM IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING OVER A BAR THAT THE OWNER HAS LET DIE.  NO WOW, NO FUN, NO NOTHING REALLY. THE INSIDE OF THE BAR IS REALLY SMALL WITH ONLY ABOUT 1200 SQUARE FEET UPSTAR AND A BASEMENT WITH ABOUT 800.  THE BIGGEST FACTOR IS THAT THERE IS A WAIVER FOR BUILDING ADDITIONS THAT COMES WITH IT, SO WE CAN ADD ON AND DO WHAT WE LIKE.  SECONDLY THE BACK PORCH / YARD AREA IS ABSOLUTELY HUGE AND IT IS ZONED FOR OUTSIDE PARTIES. I HAVE TONS OF IDEAS INCLUDING BIKINI SAND VOLLEYBALL.  I REALLY NEED THIS TO WORK. I NEED YOUR HELP.  WE ARE TAKING OVER MARCH 1. THANKS BOB

BUT YOU DID NOT SEND ANY VISUAL OF THE VENUE, YOU DID NOT EVEN MENTION WHERE IT WAS LOCATED, WHAT THE PARKING WAS LIKE, DID YOU CHANGE THE NAME, YOU STATE "WE", BUT YOU DON'T SPECIFY HOW MANY OF "WE" ARE THERE?
I DON'T SEE THIS HAPPENING WITH A HAPPY ENDING. YOU ARE TAKING OVER A DEAD BAR, REALLY SMALL INSIDE, YOU NEED MY HELP? BOB, I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE PICS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION A MONTH NOW. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT MARCH 1ST TAKE OVER.
  
 I HAVE LISTED ONE OWNER AFTER ANOTHER'S PROBLEMS, CHALLENGES, SITUATIONS, ALL IN EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE, THEY THEMSELVES CREATED. THEY REFUSED TO CHANGE, THEY REFUSED TO ACCEPT REVAMP,REINVENT, REPOSITION, RECONFIGURE, RETAKE THEIR NIGHTS. TRUST ME, I TRIED.
 
TAKE "CHECKERS" THE FAST DUAL DRIVE IN HAMBURGER CHAIN,WITH THE MANTRA "FEAST ON". THE "TODAY SHOW", "GMA" BOTH DID A SEGMENT ON NEVER EAT SAUSAGE OR BACON BECAUSE OF THE FAT, SODIUM AND CHOLESTEROL, THAT ARE SERIOUS HEALTH RISKS TO YOUR HEART. I CONTACTED "CHECKERS" DIRECT, I ASKED THEM WHY THEY ARE SPENDING ALL THEIR TV DOLLARS ON THESE ITEMS, SELLING THEM FOR $1 AND FEATURING THEM AS SO GOOD TO EAT? OF COURSE NO RESPONSE OF ANY KIND.
