9. DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH "GIRLS GONE WILD" UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, THEY HAVE THE WORSE REPUTATION ( READ THE BOOK BY A FORMER ROAD MANAGER) LISTEN UP, THEY ARE DESPICABLE AND EXPLOIT GIRLS, DO A WEB SEARCH ON THE ARRESTS, THE LAWSUITS, THE TROUBLE, THE WORSE REPUTATION IN THIS INDUSTRY.  
10. DO NOT LOSE YOUR REGULARS BY LETTING SPRING BREAK, DOMINATE YOUR BAR OR CLUB OR LOUNGE, THERE IS A PROCESS, A METHOD TO KEEPING EVERYONE HAPPY.

21. COLLEGE STUDENTS SPEND FAR MORE DISPOSABLE INCOME BY USING THEIR CREDIT CARDS, BANK CARDS, CHECK CARDS, DEBIT CARDS, DO PUSH FOR CASH, TAKE THE PLASTIC AND MAKE SURE EACH TRANSACTION IS ON THE UP AND UP
22. IF YOU HAVE AN OUTDOOR PATIO, DECK, MAXIMIZE IT'S USE.

 Hello Rich, after reading a few of your articles I have deemed you a genius and am in desperate need of your advice. I am the Nightlife Manager for a newer bar in my town of _____________, originally it was opened under the premise that the man they named it after was going to be the entertainer and they gave it a country theme. Well that man was insane, and did everything he could to scare away business and fight his patrons. Needless to say the actual owner ended up kicking him out but waited way too long. I had one of the best reputations in town for taking the best pictures and organizing the best parties so they brought me on, and I convinced them to change the country karaoke nights to club nights with a live dj. I brought in the idea to do  a swimsuit fashion show every Thursday and as it stands its the only successful night. We tried the bottle service thing and that didn't work. This is a nice bar and grill in a town needing a nightlife. We dont over do drink specials but we have found ourselves desperate because we are losing 40k a month. Please help me find a new recipe for this place. Thanks Mark

 I came across your site due the fact that I love my bar but now we are in a recession we are totally struggling. I have owned the bar for 8 years & i feel myself slowly loosing the fire i had a few years ago for this industry. We are a town centre bar in a small town the people are very hard work & they are like sheep as soon as afew start to move on the rest follow, as i work alone with ideas ect i have struggled to change the way there circles move in the town , the other bar owners never work together so attracting people to my town i have given up on, like everybody else i need to think about my own venue.  its very clean & modern but this is just not enough this is not putting money in the tills or the bank maybe i have lost sight maybe i need educating as i seem i have lost my way in what i do if i put a night on & it do's not go to plan i sulk & put my head in my hands. I got rid of my DJ's after 7 years of banging my head against a brick wall with these guys we now run of a laptop it mixes & do's everything those guys could apart from talk ! this its self is saving me thousands & i must admit the music is far better this is not the problem thow ???? feel free to get back I can take anything on the chin I will appreciate whatever you have to tell me my wrongs my rights.

YOU NEED TO STOP TRYING TO DO WHAT YOUR NOT ABLE TO. THAT IS WHY THERE ARE NIGHTCLUB, BAR, SPORTS BAR, LOUNGE EXPERTS. GETTING RID OF A DJ THAT HAS BEEN AT A BAR OR CLUB FOR SEVEN YEARS, WAS THE SMART MOVE TO MAKE, BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE REPLACED HIM WITH A DJ I WOULD OF SUGGESTED. A FRESH NEW APPROACH. RUNNING A LAP TOP WITH MIXES IS HIDEOUS. THERE IS A PLACE FOR DJS. THE MUSIC IS NOT MUCH BETTER, YOU SHOULD OF SIMPLY SAT YOUR DJ DOWN, DISCUSSED WHAT GENRES OF MUSIC HE WAS GOING TO SPIN, OR FIND A FRESH DJ, DO THE SAME. 
YEARS AGO I FIRED THE PREMIER DJ ON SOUTH BEACH, A REPUTATION FOR BEING THE BEST ON THE BEATS, BUT HE REALLY WASN'T. HIS EGO WAS HUGE, BUT HIS TALENT, JUST DIDN'T MEASURE UP.
I REPLACED HIM WITH A YOUNG, HUNGRY TO PLEASE DJ WHO PACKED THEM IN WITH MY "FUN", "WOW FACTORS" AND "FAB".
WE HAD CLUBBERS PAYING UP TO $20 NOT TO GET IN, JUST TO GET IN THE FRONT OF THE LINE. TRUE STORY.
 ANYWAY, BECAUSE YOU HAVE OWNED THIS BAR FOR 8 YEARS, YOU ARE BURNT OUT, LOST YOUR DIRECTION, ARE TOTALLY OPERATING ON EMOTION RATHER THAN EXPERIENCE. YOUR REASONING IS NOT LOGICAL. YOUR REMARKS ARE TOTALLY FROM A TOO MUCH CONTROL FREAK, TOO LITTLE RIGHT DECISIONS..

4. POOR PLANNING, POOR PRESENTING, POOR PROMOTING
5. RELYING ON CLUB PROMOTERS
6. RELYING ON YOUR DJ TO DO THE ADVANCE MARKETING
7. FAILURE TO UTILIZE ALL INTERNET SOCIAL NETWORKS
8. DEPENDING ON STAFF WITH NO EXPERIENCE TO DO WHAT ONLY LONG TIME EMPLOYEES WITH A HISTORY OF MARKETING/PROMOTING FOR AT LEAST FIVE YEARS, KNOW HOW TO DO.
9. HOLDING YOUR PROMOTION WAY TOO EARLY, AND ON A SLOW/DEAD NIGHT TO BEGIN WITH.

NOBODY WANTS TO TALK ABOUT IT, I SAY FORGET THE TALK, TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT IT. 
 
The violence in nightclubs and bars across the country has increased dramatically, it's nationwide.

The shootout last June at the South Rock Lounge Bar & Grill in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida was sparked by a fight between two men, was the bloodiest.

You should have "Wands" to wand down any potential patron you choose for knives and guns.

You should search any pocketbook you feel may contain a weapon of any kind.

You need to profile your guests.

You don't need a big burly guy @ the door, that serves no purpose.

SOME STEPS YOU CAN TAKE INCLUDE:

A Dress Code, The Genre of Music you Play, The Cover Charge you ask, are all deterrents, to avoiding tragic and deadly incidents  in your bar, or club or sports bar or lounge. 

In Broward County, Florida, the Sheriff said, "In my career, that was the most outrageous shooting I've ever seen in 34 years,"  "These things are going on, and they're on the increase."

Knives too have accounted for their share of corpses, but not as many as handguns. Since 2002, only five people � four in Broward, one in Palm Beach County , have been killed in nightclub stabbings. The most notorious was a blood-soaked melee last April when a man who police said was enraged over a bar tab killed one man and slashed four others at Fishtales in Fort Lauderdale.

IN THIS INSTANCE HAD THE VENUE USED A WAND TO DETECT METAL OBJECTS, THE KNIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN CONFISCATED AT THE DOOR. 

But guns are the preferred means of settling club disputes. Times have changed, now people solve their bar, or club problems with a gun instead of their fists. My point is you need to be vigilant and be aware of who your letting in, who is in your parking lot, Some States are considering new legislation to allow gun permit holders to bring their weapons into bars, clubs, restaurants. I think it is insane in the brain to even consider such a dangerous precedent.

PARKING LOT GUN CONFRONTATIONS ARE FAR MORE DIFFICULT TO PREVENT, BUT AGAIN IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF CUSTOMERS YOU ARE ATTRACTING.

Virtually all the shooters, and nearly all their victims, have been male. In June 2010, however, a 17-year-old girl was killed when a car full  of men sprayed bullets into a crowd outside a West Palm Beach bar.

AS a 40 year Expert on the Food & Beverage Industry, I always advise that venues profile their customers @ the door. You have the right to refuse service to anyone. You have that right to install cameras both inside and outside your establishment.

You set the tone for the quality of patron you attract. I repeat for those Owners with a failure to grasp the reality of this tragic, deadly and devastating  crisis.

Consider:

The Genre of Music you spin or play live

The Dress Code or lack of at your front door to deny entry to those people that do not meet your policy.

A Cover Charge to prevent just anyone from walking in.  

A Wand to sweep people from head to toes for weapons/ Searching pocketbooks for any type of weapon.
