JULY 2014 - DOES YOUR BAR WOW?
A simple enough question. But the answer is not so simple. Your Bar is still the same as it was five years ago.
Bars are more competitive now, than ever before.
If your in an Entertainment District loaded with bars and clubs, yours needs to stand out.
If your far away and a destination location, You must stand out for "THE WOW".
But too many Owners just don't get it or don't want to.
You simply became complacent, lazy, stale, you started coming in less, so naturally the numbers started going down dramatically.
Your bar became known as the same old boring format, with the same smell, same worn out bar stools, same smoked stained mirrors, same greasy finger prints on the doors, same disgusting bathrooms, same water stained glasses, the only reason patrons come in, is because your bartenders over pour to get extra tips and over serve for the very same reason.
You allow smoking because you don't serve food, a MAJOR MISTAKE, you have no live music, you use ROCKBOT, so you have no defined Format, you have very few great looking Females frequent your bar, except maybe you have one, working behind the bar.
You don't offer Craft Beers, you have no idea what they are? You don't feature "Brewtail" Menu, because you don't know what it is?
You just go through the motions, and watch the "Bar TV Show", because you love to see other Owners just like you, cursed at, berated, because they are all in the same boat with you.
But, may I ask you this. How are you ever going to make serious money, bring in quality patrons with a major ratio of Women vs Men, with a format that has no cheap beer or drinks, but rather an "INVIGORATING" Concept, night after night, stop the usual darts, pool, karaoke, outdated video games, why do you even own this bar, let alone operate it? Because you have no "WOW" at all.
"WOW" is what generates crowds who spend.
Beautiful Women who spend. Men who spend.
For Night Life you offer none.
Do you host Theme Nights, Parties, Concepts, Contests, Celebrations, Happenings, that place your bar on a level
Haven't you waited long enough, haven't you let your bar get run down enough, haven't you let enough troublemakers in long enough, haven't you ignored repairs, remodeling, renewing your bar, long enough???????
How much revenue and above all PROFIT did you generate from those Beer Girls showing up?
From those Liquor Brand Girls giving out brand goodies?
You bought all those cases and sold just a couple of bottles to even have those Brand Babes show up. Was it WORTH it?
What has your Bar Manager done to improve your bar from appearance to format, from image to quality patrons, from Controlling inventory to a Daily routine of cleaning, Mastering Social Media Marketing Daily, Setting up, Prepping for business every day and every night.
You see my entire focus is on your bar that holds 150 people and up, with an Occupancy Certificate of 100, means you can really hold at least 150 patrons or more. My entire Strategy starts at 10pm until closing, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Nights, and Sunday, when Monday is a legal Holiday. Think about having a "WOW BAR" four Nights a Week, plus Holiday Nights?
Look at your numbers now, then double, then triple them.
Look at your Night Life number of patrons on these specific four nights now, then evaluate the Crowds you would attract with a "Solid Game Plan" and not this "let's try this", or "Sure, let's do that". These "Hit and Miss Approaches" do not work, this type of thinking and then acting never has.
It's confusing, it's "pleading promoting". It does not work. Sure, at one time years ago, you were "BAR ON TOP" or "CLUB ON TOP", or "SPORTS BAR ON TOP" or "GENTLEMEN's CLUB ON TOP", but those days are long gone. You need to admit to yourself that you let your guard down, you let other bars take most of your patrons away.
NOW, what are you prepared to do?
Are you going to be a "WOW BAR" or NOT?

CLUBS BEFORE YOU BOOK BANDS/DJs!

The Owner of this Very Large Club wants to be a "Silent Partner" and make no more decision's.Which, is fine with all of the Staff, because everything has started to go down hill.The Club has been open for a little over 2 years. He has booked live shows, live bands. The shows,typically are classy and upbeat in style. The live show music ranges from Electric Blues to New Orleans Brass Bands.However,recently he has booked some awful shows of Hip Hop,totally a disaster. Then he went to "Old People's Bands". Old People Bands attract an over 45 Crowd, which tends to be some of these Blues Bands and Jazz Bands,This Stinks,because we are located in the middle of downtown. We are surrounded by a young crowd. Our Community is very mixed with Black Americans, Spanish Americans and White Americans.we don't want to be viewed or thought of as an "Old Person's Club" or as a "Hip Hop" Club, either. The Owner has given me the Power to start booking acts. I have over 15 years of bartending/managing experience.But I have never done booking before. I would like your Expertise in this element of the business.I think that you have the most knowledge and insight in this area. I don't know of any Tv Bar show, that reflects anyone who books, promotes and sells out Concerts and Events like you do. I agree with everything you write. Please contact me ASAP.
Leslie, First, "86" any pitch made to you by any booking Agent for Blues or Jazz Bands. Your location is not practical to book such genres of live music. Second, try to book the bands you want, directly through their manager or the band themselves. In so many instances, you do not need to go through any booking agent, unless they have a signed contract with the Artist.
I created a genre of music called "POP HOP", that is what you want to book into this club along with some high energy Female Shows that will knock their socks off and pack this club.
You want at least a sixty day exclusive, where any band or show you book, cannot play within 20 miles of your club. Why book an act that is going to play some club ten miles away, the week, before they are scheduled to perform for you?
Always read the Contract and the Rider, which is their sound, lights, Stage Size, Dressing Room, Food, Drink, Hotel, If Air or Ground Transportation before you give any deposit or sign any contract. Ask for club references at least five to check on the band's history of behavior, performance and if any trouble or problems accompany this band.
Always, Always, have a signed Contract, 45 days prior to the date of performance, this way the band can surround your date with other clubs in other areas outside the 20 mile requirement. Always, Always have a First Right of Refusal on future dates for the band at set fees. To avoid getting sticker shock, when they are asked to come back.
Always, Always, begin, inside, outside, Community Wide Marketing, no less than 30 days before the gig.
There are Five Money Making dynamics that you will use to generate additional income and revenue over/above ticket sales, bar sales, food sales.
The same goes for a "Super Star DJ".
"Afrojack" a incredibly talented International DJ was spinning at WYNN LAS VEGAS, but when the opportunity arose hakkasan Nightclub spun him away for more money and more EGO Driven Signage, when he is in Residency. Of course he is now Crowd to Crowd to see him.
"Super Star DJs", are out of control, when it comes to fees, amenities, and on and on.....
Book them carefully, because, there are two kinds of clubs, one where the DJ makes the club, the other where the club makes the Crowd.

Everybody who frequents Clubs, Bars, and most who go to Bar and Grilles read online Editions of their local newspaper on their smart phones, tablets, but very, very few people read Print Papers anymore.
So, this Legendary Bar/Grille takes a two page spread in the most expensive edition of a daily newspaper, the Sunday Edition.
And what does the AD focus on?
