Can't Afford the Bells & Whistles?

WHEN YOU CAN'T AFFORD ALL THE BELLS & WHISTLES!

By Rich Unger

I constantly read with great interest how all these clubs spend tens of thousands of dollars and even more on lights, sound, special effects and video.  But what about all the clubs who don't have deep pocket owners or investors and who want to compete with these "Fully Loaded" Clubs?  Just because a Club has invested huge dollars into their atmosphere, does not mean you can't draw their crowd and suck the life out of their nights.

It's not the lights, the lasers, the video, the plasma screens, that make a club THEE CLUB" it's "THE FUN."  You would be surprised at how many Clubs who invest such huge amounts of cash into insuring they have the biggest, brightest and best in sound, lights, video and special effects in reality, are "DEAD."  That's right empty...................................................................................................

Do you know why?

Because in these times of terror at any moment, war, and the constant stress of every day life, Clubbers want more than just the usual, they want the "WOW FACTOR" and you don't accomplish that by bells and whistles, you deliver your 'patrons "THE FUN" and the "WOW FACTOR" by doing what no other club near you is.

I am always struck by so many Owners who have no pulse on what's going on inside their club.
They are not in touch with 2005 and have no clue, no idea no concept, no plan no grasp on how to bring their club to life.  This Summer more clubs, bars, restaurants and lounges are going to close than any other year in recent memory.  Why?  The buck stops and the blame ends at the Owner.

I spoke to a friend of mine who owns a huge beer distributorship and he has never seen so many Owners, Managers and hotel beverage Managers who are totally out of their environment and have no clue what to do.

Any Hotel with a bar and a pool should be jammed packed this Summer with locals as well as guests.
I know of a Hyatt that has a Beverage Manager who has no clue as to maximize profits, make his operation far more smooth running and really does not have a clue on what is going on within his own bars.

I know of a beach type restaurant that added a Tiki Bar and has the worse format and atmosphere because again, the Owner and his management people cannot grasp the concept.  That's why it is so easy, so simple and so savvy to take on the club with all the bells and whistles and bury them.  I tell Owners every day, when you start doubling and then you triple your nights in terms of patron counts and revenue, it's not new found patrons or fresh made cash, what your doing is hurting your competition big time.

There are only so many clubbers out there, and when you start climbing, another establishment is sinking.  I welcome, I embrace, I thrive on burying the hot shot club.  Never have so many clubs put so much money into presentation only to end up giving away drinks at cheap prices, waving the cover charge and wasting dollars on promotions that are weak.

The "David and Goliath" confrontation in this industry occurs every night your both open.  When you have to drive by your competition to check out their parking lot your pathetic.  Why aren't you packing your parking lot instead?  When you have to ask your beer and liquor delivery people how your competition is doing, your running scared. Who cares? What are you doing to empty their room and fill yours?

It doesn't matter how much money they put into their bells and whistles, all that matters is what are you doing to counteract their tantalizing toys?  You would think based on industry publications that every venue that invests the really big bucks into their dance floor atmosphere is packed and doing extremely well.  I can attest to you that is pure nonsense.

I have taken clubs that have spent over a million dollars on their interior and were voted "Club of the year" and turned them into a viable packed club, because the money, the accolades were puff and didn't as Larry The Cable Guy says " GIT- R - DONE."   They didn't have "THE FUN."

So when you can't afford all the "Bells and Whistles" remember this, you don't need them, you can fight them and win, you can be "David" and beat "Goliath" when you add "THE FUN."  So while you procrastinate and slowly sink away, remember, the life line is "THE FUN," it's what I do and better than anyone else.
