DJ's, IT'S NOT JUST THE MIX, IT'S THE SAMPLER TOO!!!
By Rich Unger
Every DJ thinks the spin must win, the mix must match what about the
Samplers?
Why not incorporate the Samplers into your Mixes, stop trying to be DJ
Scribbles, and just be yourself!.
Stop dressing like a slob, stop talking street gutter over the mike, stop
hitting on every chick that comes up to the booth, stop leaving a mess in
the booth, start changing the blown out light bulbs and do the required
maintenance on the speakers and the amps, when are you going to clean all
smears and grease and smoke residue off the glass around the DJ booth?
Stop acting so rude, stop acting arrogant, stop being so ego
driven. DJ's are very easy to replace, they are only as hot as
the crowd they draw, and when they are gone, pssssst, the crowds still
comes back. I have a basic rule of law regarding DJ's and dance
floors....... It's very simple, it's the "KTDFP" formula.
"Keep The Dance Floor Packed" method. I use to host Huge
Foam Parties at AMNESIA on South Beach, the DJ was the #1 DJ on South
Beach, but the problem was he played such far out and Euro trash, nobody
danced..........I mean he got in my face and said "Look Man, I know what they
want and I am the Best."
I said "have a nice life" I had management replace him with a
young kid, who knew what the people wanted, it's called dance music.
This isn't rocket science, you don't need to burn your own CD's every
night
and play only what you think the club's patrons should hear and dance
to....You are a Disc Jockey, you should play to dance, spin to jam and add
the "Samplers" the ones you take off the hottest dance jams over
the past twenty years.
Every DJ thinks his name has to be all that, and that he must either
spin like Jellybean or he is no one.
Again, the key is if the dance floor is empty and the club is packed, you
are the weakest link.....
Approach your DJ job with a new attitude, that you will work as a team
player, that you will do above and beyond what your duties and
responsibilities call for you to perform, that you will add input and
insight to create new concepts for the club, that you will stay later and
get to the club earlier and do more and take more and give more and add
more to the club and to your energy and synergy.
