YOU'RE HIRED! YOU'RE
FIRED! & YOU'RE
TIRED!

Ever notice as a Nightclub Owner or Manager how exhausting your every day
taking care of business is and then at night you
have to do the business. It's a challenge to say
the least.
You're inundated every
day with liquor salesmen pushing new brands and new products on you, that
you need like you need another new beer. Then
there's the advertising sales barracudas from Radio, Newspaper, to Flyer
Street Teams to every single form of marketing you can think of.
Throw in the various club promoters, the other unknown sales pit
bulls pushing everything on you from new bathroom scented products to must
have ATM machines. It is amazing how you get
thru each day with these various cash sucking, money grabbing,
couldn't care less salespeople. They're
banging, hanging and dangling their down pat sales pitch for products,
services and assorted promotions and bar equipment and club paraphernalia
that you don't need, you don't want, and will never justify their
expenditure.
You will never stop these door knockers, but you can keep them to a
minimum. The key is simple, don't waste your
valuable time with anyone who can't make you back ten dollars for every
dollar you spend with them.
Ever notice how once you sign on the dotted line and write the check your
new best friend who sold you on this or that, is nowhere to be found?
Why must you always act on impulse rather than with logic and
justify the expense?
I have seen more Owners debate and mentally masturbate with their partners
and family over whether or not they should stop their drink specials,
institute a cover charge, bring in a dress code, open more nights, and
these discussions go on for days, weeks and months, and who loses out?
The Club does?
I know a Club Owner; a Tax Accountant, he is
brilliant with people's taxes and has zero brains when it comes to owning
a club. He has no consistency, he hires people
who have had major drug problems, he spends advertising dollars on
alternative newspapers that are a total waste of money, he has a VIP ROOM,
are you ready for this, filled with a wine cellar type inventory.
I mean when it comes to logic and common sense, this Gentleman's ego is
more important than making money, using common sense and doing it the
right way. He opened a club in October and he is
lucky if it makes it to next October. Live bands
that nobody wants to see, wrong music on the wrong nights, and worst of
all no "FUN."
So far, this club has gone thru a Latin night, a hip hop night, I mean
every week it's anybody's guess what the club is doing.
Since when does a Club give a Romantic Cruise away for Valentine's
Day and not do anything inside the club to pack the club?
Since when does a club ignore a Monday legal holiday and open that
Sunday Night and pack it with "The Fun"? Since
when does a club have an alternative radio station do a live remote on a
Friday Night?
I mean if you're not
busy and jammed on Friday Nights you are having serious and extreme
problems. I use this club as an example because
it is just beyond my comprehension. And it
proves and reinforces my point, owning a club is
not for everyone.
Ego and Arrogance seem to undermine the basics of what packs a club and
how to make money. When you tell a liquor
salesman "Not a single bottle" for his weekly order, you are not doing the
business. I mean you are destroying whatever
dream and fantasy you thought this club would be or become.
Now keep in mind it's April, that's only seven months of being open.
99.9% of all clubs get a one year honeymoon of packed nights, as
long as you deliver "The Fun" to your new found patrons.
This club uses a great deal of print advertising and it is hideous, the
ads, the promotions are such pathetic excuses, no wonder it has no rep on
the street as being thee place to party. It has
four People that have to meet to decide what to do next.
The problem is, none of the four have any experience in the club industry
and they have canceled acts and promotions that could have made them
thousands of dollars and booked groups and events that they lose money
with.
They thought they owned Saturday Nights so they refuse to do anything to
draw patrons in, now they woke up and their Saturday Nights have fallen
off so dramatically they are booking hideous bands.
Radio has no listeners, I don't care what you say, from Sirus Satellite
Broadcasting to iPods radio is losing billions
in revenue. Just ask Clear Channel who just took
a $4 billion markdown on the value of their
radio station licenses, ask Sumner Redstone at Viacom who just took a huge
hit on his Infinity Broadcasting Radio Subsidiary.
The Brains is Mel Karmazin who is now President of Sirius
Satellite.
Yet this Club does a remote with a station whose
listeners don't spend, are not the crowd you would desire and spends more
on the remote than they make at the door and the bar, when all is said and
counted.
This Club realistically does not have enough seats, stools and tables, the
logic was "this is a dance club," So? Does that
mean patrons don't want to sit down? I mean you
have to really stand back and wonder why the behind the bar is so big, you
could build another bar inside behind the bar.
The front entrance is about as exciting and enticing as "Desperate
Housewives" without the Women. But, this Club
who continues to operate, and who has lost its weekend packed nights, is
now in a desperate mode, you can always tell, the marketing gives it away.
There is nobody talking about the club, and there is no club generated
enthusiasm anywhere. So this Club which should
have "OWNED" it's market will die a slow death, for no reason other than
Owner apathy and Owner arrogance.
Don't let your club go the way of this club, as Quincy Jones said at the
recording of "WE ARE THE WORLD," leave your ego at the door.
This Club is the epitome of how not to plan, build and operate a club.
I mean seriously, instead of making tens of thousands of dollars each
month, this club has gone thru all of its help but maybe five out of 40
people, it has created such bad karma that the infighting between partners
is widely spreading as a daily occurence and the worst part is, again I
repeat, this club is only seven months old.
What a nightmare.
